As Friday nights temperature was rapidly descending to near freezing the Eastern Reserve was heating up to a scorching finish in the final game of he night. Under lights this fabulous field and facility was set for success with a capacity crowd.
Beginning at 6.00pm the Blues Reserves team took to the field against forth placed Bannockburn.. Bannockburn expecting an easy win were shocked when the Blues lead by Captain Hayden Stocks came out and fought a tough game for a full four quarters. The Blues unfortunately went down by 39 points, but can take solace in the fact that their strength, fitness and consistancy has been building each week and success is just around the corner.
Leading the The Mighty Winchelsea Blues onto the field Captain Andrew Leak celebrating his 200th senior game ran through a guard of honor and smashed through a Navy Blue Banner honoring his commitment and dedication to the Blues. Joining Andrew for this memorable occasion were daughters and Number one, number “3” fans Bella and Holly.
With the festivities over it was immediately down to the war for the winning points
A massive crowd came out to support both sides and were not disappointed in the quality game which provided everyone with a thrilling finish. Freezing conditions forced many to watch from the warmth of their vehicle or the warmth and comfort of the large community function centre, however, the game was so close and exciting that the last quarter had every man, women and child braving the cold to find a vantage point on the fenceline or balcony to cheer on their teams. Spectators were in a cheering frenzy during the final quarter as the players fought with everything they had to secure a win. Winchelsea taking the win by 39 points
Off the field the catering and beveridge teams were run off their feet feeding the large crowd from the canteen with hot food and drinks to keep the frost bite away. Upstairs the kitchen catered for 60 with a sit down meal in the Corporate Superboxes.
Following the game, a very large crowd all enjoyed the celebrations in the Blues rooms where a special match ball presentation was made to club stalwart and team captain Andrew Leak on the achievement of his 200 games by President Daniel Greskie.
In hosting such a large event with large scale catering in both the canteen and Community Hub Kitchen, Winchelsea Football and Netball Club would like to sincerely thank every volunteer who assisted in any way. To those who spent the full day preparing and setting up and those that came to watch and offered to help when it was obvious that extra assistance was required to cater for such a large crowd. It is only though the efforts of these hard working teams and
helpers that the night was such a success for both the club and Winchelsea Township.
