Blues Learn a Lesson from Students
The Campbelltown Blues continue to impress with their dogged defence as they challenge all comers in the Sydney Premier League. However, on Saturday the students from Sydney University taught the Blues a tough lesson in playing consistent 'Four Quarter' Football, as another valuable opportunity to secure a win eluded them.
In what turned out to be an 'arm wrestle' of a match, the students hung on to a narrow lead throughout. The young Blues matched their more fancied opponents in all their Key Performance Indicators except the scoreboard. Playing tough contested football the Blues were unable to capitalise on opportunities in front of goal. Despite the best efforts of a gallant Dave Linsen and Bryce Joynson in the midfield, the Blues were caught out by Sydney Universities fast counter attack. The Blues had their moments when they threatened to take control of the game but skill errors at critical moments squashed several momentum swings. Matthew Withers provided a powerful target up forward and Paul Green had arguably his best game for the season defensively.
Campbelltown were clearly hurting after the game and disappointed with the result. Coach Neil Brunton was optimistic after the game. "The lads are hurting and that is indicative that they are starting to realise that they have the ability to match it with all opposition now. This young team is a work in progress. We are going to be inconsistent at times but we are playing good football. We just need to sustain it for four quarters."
The Blues have a week off this Saturday while the Sydney Representative football is played over the Queens Birthday Weekend. Campbelltown's rep players in Mathew Edwin's, Amua Parika, Mitchell Hogan, Josh Van Luenen and Paul Green will all be involved and looking to impress.
