Saturday morning had dawned, the first day of winter. The weather forecast wasn't good, but the early risers had sunshine as the Under 18s had an early start at the Village Green against UNSW-ES.
It wasn't a great start for the Bombers, and although the first half was reasonably evenly contested around the ground, the Bombers struggled to create scoring chances and trailed by 12 points at the long break. And the third quarter didn't go our way, with the Bombers unable to score a goal while conceding three; trailing by 31 points at the last change.
It was a frustrating morning for the young Bombers. The marks weren't sticking, the kicks weren't quite hitting their targets. The Bombers kept working, and got two goals in the last quarter; but it wasn't enough to prevent a 31-point loss.
As that game finished, action was getting under way in the Div 4 game at Gipps Rd Oval. It was another tough challenge for the Div 4 team, and although they continued to work hard all day they went down by 89 points.
It was a lunchtime start at Bruce Purser for the Div 1 game. By then the clouds had started to roll in, along with a blustery wind; the the surface was in top condition. The Bombers wasted little time in asserting themselves as they got out to an early lead. Early in the second term the Eagles pegged the margin back to a goal, but the Bombers then re-asserted themselves with the last four goals of the quarter to lead by 30 points at the long break.
The third quarter didn't reach any great heights; but the Bombers got their game going in the last quarter, putting in our best Div 1 effort for the season to take the game by 45 points. In a sometimes physical final term in which tempers became frayed, the Bombers pulled away for an important win.
By now the cloud cover was thicker, and spots of rain were falling as the Premier Division match got under way. The first quarter was one-way traffic, as the Bombers were in complete control around the ground; getting the ball out of defence with ease, dominating possession in the midfield and presenting plenty of options up forwward. It was a display of Bomber dominance as they kicked seven goals to one in the opening term to lead by 39 points at quarter time. During the second term the rain got heavier and the ball-handling became more difficult. The game became a slog, but with the Bombers 34 points ahead at the long break, they were well placed.
The rain continued to fall in the third quarter, and the football was scrappy. With two goals apiece for the term, the margin remained at 34 points at the last change. With the game safely won, the Bombers were happy to put their cue in the rack as the rain continued to fall and the light faded. In the end, the Bombers had won by 44 points - not totally convincing and possibly should have been a bigger margin after such a dominant first quarter. But it was enough to keep the Bombers in the top 2 as we go into the mid-season break.
