The Maroochy Roos moved to fourth place on the ladder with a comfortable win over Coolangatta in windy conditions at Fisherman’s Rd on Saturday.
The clash shaped to be an important one for the Roos with the relatively ‘unknown’ Blues easily accounting for Burleigh in round 1 and stretching the undefeated Springwood the previous week.
Kicking with a strong breeze in the first quarter, the Roos got off to a flyer kicking 8.5 (7.0 in the first 15 minutes) to 1.2 in the first quarter before consolidating the lead with a 5.5 to 3.3 second quarter against a stiff breeze, despite being down to 3 players on the bench after an injury to Chappy.
The third quarter continued along the same lines as the first half with the only downside being some wayward kicking at goal (7 goals 9 behinds) while the boys failed to continue the dominance in the final term with both teams kicking 5 majors.
Taz was great focal point up front, helping himself to 9 goals while Jarryd ‘Migaloo’ Hill slotted through 5 of his own, one of which he has self nominated for goal of the year after a couple of bounces and hoof from 50m. But when you win by 100 points, it is not fair to single out individuals, as it was a great team effort.
“It was a little bit surprising,” said coach Brett Maloney.
“You never expect to have a win like that. You just go in hopeful that what you’ve put in place will hold you in good stead.”
“We put some heat on some players to pick up their acts and those guys responded pretty well.”
“We’ve still got a lot of work to do. We need to continue on and beat some sides above us to be genuine contenders.”
The Roos take on arch rivals Noosa away this Saturday in what always shapes to be tough battle irrespective of where either club sits on the ladder.

The development squad (formerly reserve grade) recorded their third consecutive win which has underlined their vast improvement to the previous two seasons (1 win in two years).
While the score line reads as a 100 point win victory, coach Burgs highlighted there was still plenty of room for improvement in particular goalkicking and bringing teammates into the game by using hand passes to reward the runners.
The Colts made sure of the clean sweep at Fisherman’s, accounting for an undermanned Coolangatta 22.17-149 to 1.4-10.
Unfortunately the third grade went down to the Jason Akermanis-inspired (he was playing with them in a one-off clash) Bribie Island squad at Bribie Island
