A big thank you to Nicholas Baltas – MJFC U15 Gold Vice Captain & Harry Boontjes MJFC U14 (Co Captain) for representing Murrumbeena Junior Football Club at this week’s 2013 SMJFL Player Youth Forum.
Held on Tuesday 21st May at the Kingston Town Hall, the purpose of the SMJFL Player Youth Forum was to host 1 x Under 14 player and 1 x Under 15 player from each SMJFL Club and is solely designed to gain feedback from the Players as to their thoughts on a range of issues within the South Metro Junior Football League.
Facilitated by Dr Sally Cockburn (aka Dr Feelgood from TV & Radio - Sally has been involved in many health organisations including on the Board of Vic Health which funds a significant number of footy health programs – including those aimed at reducing violence against women and footy as a way to foster social inclusion. She has a big interest in young people’s health, busting health myths and reducing stigma associated with some medical conditions.)
Some of the issues discussed included:
- Umpire abuse
- Umpire decisions - i.e. rushed behinds, 1m ruck rule
- Drugs and alcohol
- Sexism- female field & boundary umpires
- Racism
- Verbal abuse
- Violence - on field aggression
- Sherrin vs Burley footballs
- Fixtures & Grading
- Social media
- Mental health
- And more
Both Nick & Harry really enjoyed the opportunity to represent our Club and the discussion during the Forum. As a result, Nick has signed up to be part of the ongoing SMJFL Youth Forum creating a conduit for Player experiences of the MJFC to the SMJFL.
Congratulations and thanks to both boys for your commitment to the SMJFL, the Club, your fellow team mates and the greater good of the game of AFL Footy.
