Reserve Grade faced Norwest in the first time the two clubs have played in many a year. Campbelltown were primed for a big game and needed to get off to a good start early to have any chance of staging an upset.
With a 3 to 4 goal south westerly blowing Campbelltown got off to the start they have been looking for all year. The return of N.Smith from Premier division made a huge difference in the opening stages with the two Smith brothers dominating the early clearances giving Campbelltown good field possession. In addition the backline held its own and for the first time all season did not concede a single goal for the quarter which in itself was a fantastic plus for the home side. In the forward line Coorey and Johnson both kicked goals giving Campbelltown a quarter time lead of 2.2.14 to the much fancied NorWest 0.4.4.
With a 14-4 lead Campbelltown had plenty of optimism going forward and with the breeze against them Norwest were expected to run away with it. Campbelltown managed to Work the ball up field against the Breeze and do what NorWest couldn’t, Kick a goal against the breeze. This spurred Campbelltown and once again the defence held firm rebounding countless Norwest attacks to go into the Main break behind by just the 3 points 23-20.
The third quarter things just fell apart the loss of Josh Mahina to concussion and Johnson with a Hip injury didn’t help the cause and even tho Campbelltown had the breeze fitness and ill discipline along with communication breakdowns with players out of position, things just fell apart. To Campbelltown’s credit they were still in the contest at 3 quarter time although it was only a sign of what was to follow.
With the score at 55-20 at the start of the 4th quarter, Campbelltown with two down on the bench just ran out of legs and could not hold the Rampaging Jets as they Piled on 10 goals to absolutely blow the score line out. Although Campbelltown failed to score a single point in the 2nd half, it was great to see some fight in the side albeit for a half of football. Stand out players for Campbelltown includedN. Smith, J. Kunde, J. Harris, M. Dahler, B. Smith, and J. Quick-Nadin with J.Kunde taking out the player’s player award. Next week reserves face Western Suburbs at Picken oval which is certain to be another bruising encounter.
