Women 8.14-62 def
Southern Power 2.1-13
The Women Warriors have moved a game clear on top of the ladder after accounting for 2nd placed Southern Power on Saturday – 8.14.(62) to 2.1.(13).
The Warrior’s first match on University Oval for 2013 started off with some excellent attacking footy in the centre by Nakita Brown and Liz Fassone. They provided great drive into our forward line, where Aislinn Albury once again showed her ability as a solid target, and there was also some clean roving work from Jess Willemse and Tash Nair. After the girls kicked the first two goals, Southern Power struck back with a goal of their own and the Warriors knew that the challenge had been put to them.
The second quarter, however, was a great response. Jessie Wong and Aislinn Albury took their opportunities and rookie Stacey O’Loughlin scored a great goal on the run. The defense once again held up strongly with Jessica Bond and Leah Woldhuis clearing any danger, with help from Sherri Plain and Susan Payne. It was a four-goals-to-one second term and it might have even been more if not for some errant goalkicking heading toward halftime.
Southern Power pressed strongly in the third quarter, but a brilliant effort from midfielder Laila Waisu brought the Warriors back into the game, along with some great run from Loretta Moore and Bec Beeson on the wings. Steff Lee scored a fantastic snap goal and the girls were then well on top of the game.
The fourth quarter was pretty dour from both sides as injuries and the heat hit both teams, but the end result was a 49 point win to Macquarie Uni - who now remain undefeated after five rounds.
Under 18's 6.8-48 def by
Holroyd Parramatta 12.9-81
Where, to start... Our first loss for the year. The top of the table clash was always going to be hard for an undermanned 18s side. With a number of players away and the season ending injury to Riley Cooper the boys went in to the game with only 20 players and question marks over a few boys fitness. All this aside the boys played a ferocious first half that saw them down by only 4 points at half time. That was where the game stalled for many of the players and Holroyd ran away with the third quarter often at times looking like they were running around witches hats. A better fourth quarter stemmed the flow of goals but wasn't enough to claw back the margin with Holroyd running out comfortable victors.
Injuries to vice captain Jack Riley and star forward Ollie Jackson further compounded the loss.
This weekend offers a chance for redemption against second placed Manly at home! A big night on the track this Thursday and we should be back to singing the song by 6pm Saturday!
Thanks again must go to all of our helpers, including NH Jacko for his field umpiring and to the 18’s (1st half) and 1’s (2nd half) who did a great job. Yoda & Boomer combined well as team runners, and Cookie & Van showed great team spirit to come down and run water, even though they sat out the game. Thanks must also go to the girls who stuck around all day and cheered loudly for both the 18’s and 1’s in their respective games!
Next week the Warriors travel to Auburn and will be looking to continue their great form so far in 2013.
