MATCH REPORT
Vermont has recorded a massive percentage shot in the arm with a 176 point annihilation of Scoresby at Terrara Road in their Round Six clash. The victory by the Eagles was a record margin against the Magpies, eclipsing a 165 point win recorded back in 1993. The margin also boosted the side’s ladder status moving above Noble Park into 3rd place.
There was sheer dominance all over the field and no more so than the competitions Rolls Royce midfielder Ryan Mullett. The classy leader racked up 37 disposals (22 kicks and 15 handballs) along with 10 marks and topped off his exquisite display with five goals. Also gathering plenty of the football were Nathan Henley (31 disposals and 11 marks), Tom Schneider, Lachie Johns and David Barton (all 29) who also were treated along with their skipper after the final siren with a case of leather ”poisoning”. Ruck duo Robbie Ross and Simon Taylor gave the on ballers every opportunity to win possession with dominant individual displays.
Down back Grant McCarthy and Dean Millhouse were again as solid as a rock and the unheralded Travis Bird again looked extremely solid having come off a superb fortnight of negating opposition power forwards.
While the result will be remembered for some time to come it will also signal the memories of when star full forward Matt Greig brought up goal number 700 for the Eagles. Last week Greig started to show signs that his goal kicking mojo was on the way up. Well that mojo was bursting at the seams with a superb seven goal haul as a reward for some sublime sharp shooting.
For their part Scoresby certainly tried for the entire match to give a contest but were simply out bodied and out skilled it was that plain and simple. The sign of things to come was on show in the opening minute of the contest as Ryan Wilson slotted home a long range goal. This would be the first of seven unanswered goals for the first quarter.
Goals to Mullett, Justin van Unen, Kris Bardon and Ash Froud by the 15 minute mark of the quarter had the home side out to a solid 34 point lead.
The visitors only score of the term coming through a point 22 minutes in. Schneider extended the lead out to 42 points at the 24 minute mark after coolly slotting home from 25 metres. Like a well written script at the 27 minute mark the Eagles high flying number 27 ran on to a slick pass from Millhouse. From 35 metres out Greig made no mistake to signal goal number 700 as his team mates flooded in to congratulate him on the marvellous feat.

As he did in the first quarter Wilson got the Eagles again off to a flying start with a goal finishing off some good lead up work.
Van Unen kicked his second after a good mark and finish a minute later and Ben Crowe blew the margin out to 66 points at the eight minute mark when he made no mistake from 20 metres out after a superb tackle resulted in a free kick.
Scoresby finally brought up their first goal on 11 minutes when Jarrod Hicks slotted the ball home from a tight angle. Greig and Mullett both registered maximum points to move the lead out to 75 points.
That lead was slightly reduced when Brad Jones goaled at the 24 minute mark after winning a free kick and a subsequent 25 metre penalty.
But two quick goals from Froud and a snap from van Unen took the Eagles to a sizeable 88 point lead at half time.

With hauls of seven and eight goals in the opening two quarter, the Eagles again went on the rampage in the third quarter kicking 9.4 to the visitors 2.2 to extend the lead to 133 points by quarters end.
It was the Matt Greig quarter with a four goal haul, three of the goals coming in the space of four minutes between the 10 – 14 minute marks and all from similar range on the half forward flank at the Primary School side of the ground.
Other goals for the quarter coming from Mullett (2), Henley, Froud and Andrew Ellis.
Scoresby’s two goals for the quarter coming from the Hicks brothers Jarrod and Ryan.
Half Time: Vermont 24-19-(163) Scoresby 4-6-(30)
Having put in such a dominant performance the Eagles again were relentless in the final quarter kicking seven unanswered goals and in turn moving into the double hundreds.
Goals to van Unen and Ross seven minutes in blew out the lead to 145 points.
Mullett brought up his fifth of the afternoon when he drilled a 50 metre bomb and the lead moved out to 151 points.
When Johns further extended the margin just shy of time on former Magpie Paul Chadwick got into the act when made it 165 points when Greig unselfishly passed the ball to him.
Greig then rounded off his afternoons work to nail his seventh at the 25 minute mark after getting on the end of a Crowe run and carry to make no mistake with a superb set shot from 40 metres.
The avalanche of goals finally ended when Chadwick finished off some good lead up work from van Unen and Greig to grab his second goal.
