It was a glorious sunny Saturday at Gore Hill Oval, the ground was looking a treat; the scene set for a sensational day of footy.
First up were the Under 18s, taking on Southern Power. And from the beginning, it was looking like a dominant display from the Bombers. The first goal was on the board within a minute, setting the scene for a one-sided quarter in which the Bombers ran in seven goals to one to lead by 37 points at the first change. The second quarter was closer, but the Bombers had the answers to any Power challenge and the 37-point lead remained intact at half time.
It was a low-scoring third term, as the Bombers weren't able to keep the scoreboard ticking over as quickly as they had in the first half. Two late goals to the Power reduced the margin to 34 points at three quarter time. The Bombers still held a comfortable lead; and they built on that in the last quarter as they re-asserted themselves. Six unanswered goals stretched the final margin to a 70-point win; moving our young Bombers into the top five.
Next up was the Div 4 game, the first of three against UTS. It was a bright start for the Bombers, kicking the first two goals of the game. But the rest of the first half was a struggle against the Bats, who quickly took the lead. The Bombers trailed by 22 points at quarter time; and after being held scoreless in the second term found themselves 51 points in arrears at half time.
A strange topsy-turvy match tightened in the third quarter after an early UTS goal, but the Bombers gradually rallied, two late goals cutting the margin to six points at the last change and scores were level in the opening minute of the last term.
It was a thriller, the crowd on the hill and in the clubhouse stunned into silence as the Bats again threatened to kick clear before the Bombers pegged them back. The Bombers got to within a kick at the 20 minute mark; and kept the ball locked in the forward line during the closing stages. But the UTS defence held firm and the Bombers were unable to find the late winner; the unbeaten run to start the season coming to an end with an agonising four-point defeat.
It was hard work for the Bombers, with the UTS side continuing their imposing form in the second half. And although the Bombers tried hard, it wasn't our day; and when the final siren sounded the Bombers had gone down by 126 points.
Div 1 were on next. By now the sun had begun to move behind the grandstand, the shadows getting longer. The first quarter wasn't a good one for the Bombers, unable to score as the defences held tight. But they lifted in the second term, putting in a solid effort around the ground but still finding themselves 22 points behind at the long break.
The third quarter was a struggle, as the Bombers tried hard not to be blown away by the Bats. But some resolute defence held the Bats to one goal for the quarter, but the Bombers were only able to score a point; and at three-quarter time the Bombers were 34 points behind.
The Bombers came to life in a sometimes firey final quarter, throwing everything at the Bats in the hope of pulling off an unlikely comeback win. The Bombers came storming home in the final quarter, but the Bats had enough of a buffer to hold the Bombers out, and the final siren sounded with the Bombers 13 points short.
Finally it was time for the Premier Division fixture, with the Bombers looking to maintain their unbeaten run in a clash with UTS. The lights went on as the game started, and to everyone's relief they all went on with no problems. The first quarter was goal for goal, two evenly-matched teams shooting it out for four goals apiece and scores level at the first change. It was an entertaining contest, but the Bats' superior accuracy in front of goal gave them the edge in the second term as the teams returned to the rooms at half time with the Bombers 13 points behind.
