KELSEY GADE is a Teacher, Actor, Model, Fashion Tragic and Writer
~ 2012 Melbourne Fringe Festival Participant.
Kelsey’s first professional job was working with Chris Lilley, in a featured role at age 14, in the precursor to Summer Heights High, in a segment called Mr. G on the Hamish & Andy TV Show. She lays claim to being the original Ranga!
Lilley described her as a “young Magda Szubanski” due to Kelsey’s advanced comedic skills at such a young age, when he discovered her doing an impromptu standup routine for other young cast members, who he found laughing hysterically at Kelsey’s antics!
Kelsey first stepped on a stage at age 5 – and that was it. She proclaimed to want to be a “real actor”. She never swayed from that path.
Kelsey later attended the prestigious Haileybury College, coming equal top in Drama and in the top 3% of the state for her monologue in Theatre Studies. She is comfortable in dramatic roles but her forte is comedy.
Stuart Bell, Director of Performing and Visual Arts at Haileybury College, recently said of his past student …
“One of the most intense young performers I have worked with. She can capture characters well beyond her years with total belief. She also does a fine line in sarcasm!”
A natural redhead, she embraces her “ranganess” with pride and has an unhealthy obsession with all things Ariel The Little Mermaid … identifying at a young age with the strong willed character.
Following her dream to act, Kelsey achieved a double degree from Deakin University, Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Secondary teaching, majoring in drama, during which time she met Rob who was her final year supervising teacher.
Kelsey’s Deakin lecturers, John Jacobs and Simon Fisher, have said …
“Kelsey had great presence and spirit on stage – and great comic flair. She shone amongst her peers.”
Rob vowed that he had to work with her as she was one of the most talented young performers, and drama teachers, he had seen.
Not afraid of a challenge, Kelsey was chosen, at age 19, to teach Drama and English on Christmas Island’s Detention Centre for a month as a volunteer. Here she developed a love of multi-cultural teaching concepts.
Currently, at age 23, she is Head of Drama at a non-denominational, predominantly Muslim and Turkish girl’s school, Isik College.
