Division 1 10.10-70 def
St George 3.8-26
Saturday saw the seniors take on the ladder leaders St George who were 4 – 0 coming into the game. The game presented another good challenge for the boys not only in terms of the opposition but also for themselves after 3 successive wins away from home. Now we were back at home in a twilight game against a team that would be very keen to continue to prove themselves since coming up from Division 2.
In the first quarter it was a fairly open affair with both teams keen to put scoreboard pressure on each other. With a four goal to 3 quarter it appeared we did have a great challenge on our hands, particularly after learning that St George had several of their key players missing due to them going on holidays (nice to be on the other side of that this season).
After quarter time we began to build more pressure on the opposition, although it is fair to say if they had of kicked more accurately (0.5) the two goal advantage we held at ½ time would have read a bit differently. We did believe however that the game could be broken open in the 3rd quarter if we held our composure and squeezed them when they had the footy. This is pretty much what occurred with a 3 goal to 0 quarter which saw us lead by 5 goals. The final quarter again saw us maintain the pressure on St George eventually running out 44 point winners. Our best players included Jimmy Brackin at CHF and in the ruck, Jimmy Moylan of half back and Cam Ludowyke at full back.
This week presents another big challenge in Holroyd Parramatta who played finals last season and are one of the top teams again in 2013. See you at home for our 2.10pm start.
Women 18.12-120 def
UTS Shamrocks 0.0-0
The Women Warriors moved to top spot on the ladder on Saturday after another clinical performance, defeating UTS 18.12.(120) to 0.0. (0) at Northern Oval.
With rain threatening all day (but never really eventuating), the Warriors importantly got off to another great start with goals to Sam Martin and Jess Willemse in the opening minutes. The midfielders once again showed great poise under pressure throughout the opening term and won plenty of contested footy with Laila Waisu, Liz Fassone and Kristy Sutcliffe winning the early clearances.
The pressure lifted again in the second quarter, with the backline led by Leah Woldhuis and Jessica Bond repelling several attacks, and they were helped admirably by Barbara Lynch and Susan Payne who attacked the ball relentlessly. Amanda Farrugia continued to work hard all day and Sarah Botros was again ferocious in her tackling and support play. Stacey O’Loughlin presented well up front, while Vanessa Poon again showed plenty of pace to score a great goal.
But it was the third quarter efforts of Aislinn Albury up forward (6 goals) and Loretta Moore in the ruck which were the most impressive displays. Two players in two positions that neither of them play regularly was a great sign of the team’s versatility and also of the girls’ willingness to put the team’s needs before their own.
The Warriors maintained the rage in the final quarter with some great play – most notably Tash Nair who slotted a brilliant goal after evading a defender, bouncing and kicking it from a tough angle. By the final siren the Women had once again kept an opponent scoreless for an entire game, meaning that the team has now only conceded one scoring shot in four games – a phenomenal statistic!
The Warrior Women must be congratulated not only for their performance, but also for their handling of a very difficult week. Preparation for the game itself had not been ideal given that the match time, day and venue had changed twice at short notice. Most significantly though, there had been some very sad family news for one of our favourite players Nakita Brown. We wish the Brown family all the best at this difficult time, and we look forward to seeing Nakita back on the field very soon.
A big thank you once again to Will for umpiring, and also to Brent Pawley - who is yet to sit down and actually watch a game as he is always helping out – this time as a Goal Umpire! Mat Tharme and Gav Nixon ran hard all day to deliver messages in the fluros, and thanks to the 1’s and 3’s boys who ran boundaries and water. A special thanks also to Jimmy Moylan and Pete LeBreton who did a great job setting up the ground beforehand.
The Warriors now have a huge clash against Southern Power this weekend at University Oval, with the winner to be a game clear in top spot. Bring it on.
Division 3 5.9-39 def by
Sydney University 15.11-101
The Warriors played host to Sydney Uni in what was their first home game since round one, and the boys were eager to make amends for some poor results in the last 2 starts.
Unfortunately things did not go to plan in the first quarter as Sydney Uni’s run allowed them to get loose far too often and open up a 27 point quarter time lead.
In the second quarter however, the boys responded in true Warriors style, turning up the pressure and dominating for large portions of the quarter. If not for some at times wayward goalkicking and a Sydney Uni steadier on the bell it could have been closer, but the boys went in to the long break facing a 17 point deficit.
The third quarter was a largely even affair with play split fairly evenly between both sides, however it was the visitors who took the most of their opportunities and were able to open up a 31 point lead going into the final change. An early mark and goal by Princess made for an interesting finish, however Sydney Uni put the afterburners on at this point and kicked away for what ended up a sizeable 62 point win, however the game was hotly contested for the most part and many positive signs emerged.
