On Thursday Night, the Campbelltown Blues Football Club traded its traditional Navy Blue to a lighter Blue in Support of the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia. The Blues finished training and all made in back into the clubrooms for a talk on Prostate Cancer, with our Sponsors Bupa Health, FitHQ gyms and two very special guests in the Dymanic Duo of Tex and Bundy. We held a Father/son Pie Night in which all proceeds from the night went to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia.
Tex is a Returned Naval Serviceman, who served some 20 years in Submarines, retiring in 1992.Tex moved to the Coffs Coast on Completion of his Military Service and went on to become a Commercial Pilot doing outback adventure tours as well as doing mobile mechanical work and driving Interstate Trucks. Tex was offered a position as a Workshop Manager with a big company in Sydney which he took up, this lead to managing and owning several Automotive & Motorcycling workshops in NSW.
Having Road Raced Motorcycles with mixed success in the late ‘70’s & ‘80’s as well as competing in the Wynn’s Safari on a bike in 1985, then in 4wd’s in ’86 & ’87 and again in1990. In October of 1978 Tex had a crack at the “Around Australia Motorcycle Endurance Record” riding an F2 Honda 750 he knocked off 24 hours from the previous record set by the NSW Highway Patrol, in a time of 8 day’s 23 hours & 57 minutes for the 15,500 km journey. However his Naval Commitments hindered his motor racing progress. Tex made a return to his much loved Road Racing M/c’s in the late ‘90’s winning two National BEARS titles as well as numerous race win’s. He also competed in Dirt track racing with Sidecar’s with much success.
Whilst managing a 1000 acre property on the outskirts of Cooma in 1999 Tex was given a Blue Heeler pup that was to be a companion for his other dog, a Rottweiler called “Tango”. Tex aptly called his new pup; “Cash”!
No one could of guessed the impact that Cash was to have on Tex’s life, for it was Cash that was to teach Tex the power of Animals in a hospital or Charity work. Cash would not let Tex go anywhere on the Farm Quad or his road bike without wanting to be there for the ride! Cash, dressed in his jacket, bandanna & goggles soon became known in motorcycling circles. They were often asked to lead various Charity rides which then lead to Hospital visits for the sick, elderly, Palliative care, Children’s wards and terminally ill kids. Seeing the smiles and hope that they gave, not only to those hospital bound, but to the general public as well. Tex decided it was time to give all he had up and become a full time self-funded Philanthropist. Turning back some lucrative jobs in the flying industry, Mechanical shops and the Mines, all so he could help others!
Tex & Bundy moved back up to the Coffs Coast in 2010, a place they proudly call home. Tex, forever the true Aussie Larrikin, always there with a cheeky smile, a story or a joke and a helping hand, along with his faithful companion & sidekick, Cash, became a regular sight on our roads. Unfortunately, in 2005 after some 400,000klms with Tex, Cash was killed whilst crossing a road.
A devastated Tex, along with many other people were shattered by the news of Cash’s passing. However, with the help of some good friends, Tex regrouped some 12months later. With Cash gone, but not forgotten, Tex went forward on a quest to find another Blue Heeler, not any Bluey, but one with that special something, after all, there was some big shoes to fill! After looking at some 250 dogs all over NSW, Tex chose a 6 week old Stumpy tailed Smithfield Blue Heeler bitch from Mudgee and called her “Bundy” and so the legendary Tex & Bundy begun!
Since then Tex and Bundy have driven a totlal of 600,00kms together or 23 laps around Australia. Amazingly Bundy has never fallen off the bike one. "We can be driving down the straight at Phillip Island getting to 250km/h and once breaking to take turn 1, Bundy will be sitting out over the handle bars and her sunnies in face"
Bundy Holds the World Record for being the Fastest Dog, while Tex holds the record of going around Australia in an amazing 8 days! But what is even more incredible is the amount of charity work they do together. "Bundy helps raise awareness to a number of charities as well as raising about a half a million dollars a year"
Tex and Bundy came to the Footy Club to help raise awareness for Prostate Cancer. Prostate Cancer is the 2nd highest cancer behind skin cancer in men. "3300 men die to a cancer which if caught early is 100% cureable" Tex said on the night "Your a bigger man to go and have it checked out by a doctor then if you didnt". Prostate Cancer is a genetic disease, "20000 men are diagonosed with Prostate Cancer every year in Australia" Tex stated "if your father had it, most likely you will get it". "Men as early as 30 have been diagonosed with Prostate Cancer, but you shoud get a check up once a year from 40 onwards"
We would like to thank Tex, Bundy, and all of our guests for coming on the night, We would also like to thank all the players, famiy and friends who bought pies on the night and donated there spare change. We would like to give a donation of $200 to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia on Behalf of the Campbelltown Australian Football Club
