Campbelltown were buoyed with several premier division players dropping down to play reserve grade. Campbelltown started the game with a strong backline on paper and also played an extra man down back to start the match. In what was a very conservative move by the coach turned into a nightmare with players seemingly losing touch with their opponents and the midfield failing to stop Penrith’s early run, a half asleep Campbelltown, found themselves reeling at quarter time with the scoreboard displaying a commanding 36 nil quarter time lead. Once again reserve grade gave their opponents a massive start that would prove hard to reel back.
A Quarter time spray put players on notice. Campbelltown reverted to a man on man approach for the second quarter. This sparked life into Campbelltown not seen all season,With two quicks crumbing goals to Tyerman and Fraser, players lifted and responded to the call and showed some vintage football and with various Malays breaking out around the ground Campbelltown was back to its best intimidating the opposition and letting them know they were in for a fight. Campbelltown rallied to come out on top winning the second quarter 20 points to 15 showing once again that Campbelltown has the ability to win quarters. That’s the second week in a row now the reserves have won a 2nd quarter which is a positive sign.
The third and fourth quarters were another tough encounter with both sides playing some good football. Campbelltown lost Matty Moore to a nasty ankle injury which ruled him out for the remainder of the game. Campbelltown continued to work hard, although the 36 to nil 1st quarter proved a hurdle to hard to overcome.
Amoung Campbelltown’s best were , J. Quick-Nadin, B. O''Brien, D. Fraser, N. Burton, B. Lewis, J. O''Brien who tired tirelessly all day. In addition J. O''Brien , N. Hudson , N. Tyerman , S. Johnson , S. Mahina , D. Fraser all managed to jag a goal to their name.
Next week Campbelltown face Blacktown, last years Division 3 Runner Ups, at the new Blacktown International Sports stadium at 10am.
