The Werribee Tigers will welcome next weekend’s break, after suffering a third successive defeat today at Simonds Stadium. The Tigers played three competitive quarters of footy, before Geelong exploded in the final term to win the K-Rock Cup fixture by 55 points.
Werribee assistant coach Chris Gilham said there was a massive improvement on last week’s performance, before the side was “outworked” in the final term.“Our focus this week was to really get our structures right – our stoppage work, our ability to close down the opposition and our team defence.”“We were able to do that pretty well for most of the time, but if you don’t do it for four quarters you’re going to get burnt late in the game”
Geelong kicked the first three goals of the game, before Addam Maric snapped across his body to get the Tigers on the board midway through the opening term.A pair of superb spoils from Jake Wilson and Ben Brown on the goal line saved certain goals, inspiring Werribee to dominate the second half of the term.
Ben Warren kicked truly just before the siren to give the Tigers an unexpected four point lead at quarter time, and he showed off his strength soon after the break, shrugging off an opponent to slot his second major and extend the lead into double figures.
However, Geelong responded as only a reigning premier does, with forwards Nathan Vardy and George Burbury finding plenty of the ball and giving their side a 15-point advantage at half time.A long bomb goal early in the third term from Scott Sherlock was followed by a courageous mark and goal for skipper Robbie Castello, as Werribee dominated the play.
The Tigers within a point after a superb second effort from Mason Wood resulted in a goal but Vardy kicked his 5th for the Cats soon after, and it was all Geelong for the rest of the third term.Clouston kicked the first goal of the final term to bring the margin back to 14 points, but it was all Geelong thereafter as they ran riot late in the game.
Gilham said a few fundamental errors by hand and foot hurt the Tigers on the counter-attack, while they were guilty of playing a little bit “too cute at times.
Werribee were not helped by the early loss of ruckman Daniel Currie with a hand injury, although Brown and debutant Darcy Fort showed a lot of promise, competing with big Cat Dawson Simpson.Gilham praised his two young talls and Ben Ross for his lock-down role on Geelong forward Dom Gleeson.
He said reviewing the game would be important, as the coaches and players continue to work on improving Werribee as a footy team.“We’re not going to throw our whole game plan out the door, we’ve just got to do it better for longer.”
