Coburg were defeated 3.17.95 to 18.15.123 on a windy day out at Box Hill City Oval on Saturday. Coburg started strongly with the wind in their favor, but Box Hill gradually clawed their way back and eventually came out on top.
The day started with all the usual Anzac weekend proceedings, with the players forming to listen to the last post and the national anthem, providing incentive to give that little bit of extra effort to honor our Anzac's. It certainly seemed to spur Coburg on in the first term, getting off to a great start and jumping out to a 32 point lead at the first change. There was a strong wind blowing towards Coburg's side of the ground for the quarter and the Tigers certainly managed to use it to their advantage. Liam McBean was the star for the quarter kicking 2 goals and providing a strong target.
It was Box Hill's turn to use the wind in the second quarter. They hit straight back by kicking 7 goals to 3 for the term and bringing the margin back to just 1 point (9.5.59 to 8.10.58) in favor of Coburg. Aaron edwards kicked all 3 Coburg goals, taking his tally to 4 at half time.
The wind was less predictable in the second half, not providing the advantage it did in the first. This made it quite a different contest for the third quarter, with things certainly tightening up. Box Hill managed to take the lead and hold on to it by 9 points going in to the final change.
Coburg managed to keep within a couple of goals for most of the final term, but eventually conceded a few goals in a row to give up an irretrievable lead late in the game. Box Hill had more legs in the end and used them to run out victors by 28 points.
There were a few shining lights for Coburg despite the loss. Aaron Edwards continued his fine start to the season with 5 goals. Matt Arnot won a heap of contested ball in the middle, ending up with 28 disposals and a goal, and Nathan Foley played his first full match of the season also wracking up 28 touches. Orren Stephenson continues to give the midfielders first opportunity more often than not (28 hitouts), and also provided a good marking target around the ground (19 possesions). These, added to the general overall effort of the players shows that there are positive signs for the weeks to come.
