THE GREATEST COMEBACK IN HISTORY!
Last Saturday saw our senior team mount the single largest comeback from a 3/4 deficit of 41 points in our 92 year history of The Silvan Football Club.
Playing the game at Forest Hill and in extremely windy conditions, the Zebras played all over us in the first three quarters. A goal after the siren at 3/4 time put Forest Hill 41 points up. Assistant Coach, Gordon Sumner gave the boys a few "home truths" and instructed them to play man on man footy. They were told to win the contested footy and move the ball quickly and direct into the forward line. What turned out to be the move of the century, Adam "Mutta" Newing was moved to the goal square. Unbeknown to all who were there to witness it, Mutta was about to play a once in a lifetime quarter of football. The move paid off immediately with Mutta kicking the first goal of the last quarter. By the 10 minute mark Mutta had kicked 4 goals and 2 behinds. With the lead down to 15 points, you could see the boys attitude change and all of a sudden we were back in the game. A strong mark to Dan Toohey and goal put us 9 points in arrears. Forest Hill hit back and kicked the next goal, back to 15 points. But Mutta wasn't finished just yet, another mark and goal from him and along with a rushed behind put us 8 points down with five minutes to play. Darcy had completely taken over in the ruck and our onballers were winning clearance after clearance. Goody kicked a "coaches goal" from about 40 meters out on 45 degree angle on the run. All of a sudden we were 2 points down with maybe 2 minutes to play. The Cats were surging, another centre clearance saw the ball deep in our forward line. Enter the man of the moment "Mutta", from about 10 meters out Mutta kicked the loose ball off the ground. And with three or four Forest Hill players desperately diving at the ball that would ultimately sink them, the footy rolled through for our eighth goal of the quarter. Mutta had kicked 6 goals and 2 behinds in the last quarter! And 7 goals for the game. With only seconds to go the Zebras won the centre clearance and had the ball deep in their forward pocket. They were desperately trying to give someone enough room to have a shot at goal. But with our steely resolve a rushed Forest Hill kick ended up with a mark to Sweata on the last line of defense. Sweata cleared the ball to our half back line and after a few more acts of desperation by the relentless Catters, the siren sounded. The greatest comeback in our history was complete. There were scenes of jubilation and of utter shock as you looked around Forest Hill Reserve. Even though the Zebra's supporters were gutted by the loss, they along with us, knew we had just witnessed GREATNESS!!
