Saturday dawned bright and sunny, sensational conditions for footy. And with the Bombers split far and wide over the weekend, there was plenty of footy to look forward to.
The Under 18s were on first, taking on Riverview away. The ground was looking a treat, and it was a tough and physical contest early; but the Bombers got on top late in the quarter to kick the only three goals of the term and lead by 19 points at quarter time.
Riverview scored an early goal in the second term, a score that was greeted with a pitch invasion by four local dogs. But the Bombers soon regrouped with four unanswered goals before half time to open up a 42-point lead at the long break.
Everything our young Bombers was doing was coming off. Committed, first to the ball, and finding their leads as the floodgates opened. The goals kept coming, reward for effort as a comprehensive and convincing win continued to unfold. The final margin of 82 points was a reflection of the Bomber dominance. Our young Bombers have been training hard, working hard; and with a performance like this, it shows that big results are possible.
Mid-afternoon saw two games being played concurrently. The seniors were taking on UNSW-ES at the Village Green; while Div 1 were in action at Gipps Road against Holroyd-Parramatta.
At the Village Green, the Bombers conceded an early goal but quickly got it back and would not be headed again in the first half. It was a willing contest between two of the competition's front-runners; and was a spectacle worthy of a top game. The Bombers at times threatened to get on top, but the Bulldogs had the answers.
The Bombers continued to press hard, with Danny Roberts scoring three goals in the first half, but the highlight was a sensational intercept and goal on the run by Doug Hadden. The Bombers led by 10 points at the long break, well placed but still with plenty of work to do.
The North Shore parade continued in the third term, with plenty of scoring opportunities; and although some were missed, many were taken. By mid-way through the quarter, the Bombers were out to a 27-point lead. The Bulldogs fought back late in the quarter and early in the last to get the margin back to 14 points, but the final stages of the game saw the Bombers re-assert their dominance.
Danny Roberts finished with 5 goals and Doug Hadden 3, and during the final stages of the game the Bombers were picking up possessions around all areas of the park with ease. It was a convincing performance against the defending champions, maintaining our unbeaten record in 2013 to date.
The news wasn't quite so good at Gipps Road Oval. Div 1 had enjoyed a stirring win the previous week, but were unable to repeat that performance against the Goannas, going down by 37 points.
Div 4 was in action on Sunday lunchtime at Henson Park. In the warm conditions, it was a struggle against the well-drilled Students; and although the Bombers gave their all, they were unable to prevent a 113-point defeat.
