Women, Girls Fly Surf Coast FC Flag

Surf Coast FC womens and girls team have flown the flag high for the club in the early part of the 2013 season.

In their debut season the women’s State 4 league team now sit second on the table after putting 13 unanswered goals into the back of their opponents net over the weekend. Minnie Feakes, Jarrah Davie and Cassidy John tore the opposition to shreds.

The under 14s metro girls, also in their debut season in this league, are unbeaten as well, scoring a terrific 3/1 win over Northcote. Goal scorers were Caitlin Pickett, Ashleigh Stavenuiter and Georgia Gordon.

In the local u14s girls competition, the two surf Coast FC teams are in the top 4, with Surf Coast Blue topping the table.

The local womens division two  - made up of under 17s girls – did very well also, but narrowly went down to Kardinia 4/3 who have traditionally put out a strong side. These two teams have met many times over the past four years and Kardinia has won the Grand Final every year. This year may be different. The Coasters took the first half 3-2, working the ball well in the mid-field and holding their positions. This gave new striker Tyrah Brown plenty of opportunity to score. She timed her strikes beautifully, despite the solid defending the Kardinia back line is renowned for. The third goal was scored by Mikayla Willsmore, who showed her usual speed on the wing, despite an injury. It was dithering in defence that cost the Coasters the two goals in the first half. The back line lacked confidence and needed to attack the ball more. It was a similar scenario in the second half, with the Coasters not picking up players as well as they could. This resulted in two goals to their opponents. Fitness was also a factor. This is the first season these girls have played in the women’s division with the 45 minute halves. They will need to get to training and work on their discipline if they want to claim their rightful place at the top of the league this year.   Best on ground – Tyrah Brown and Heather Gibson

The mens and boys had mixed results in this round, with the state League 4 firsts team putting in a good first half before falling apart to a powerful Corio side in the second half. The final score 5/1 to Corio.

The very young reserves team however, boasting several 15 year olds and 14 year old Alex Fannon, played a terrific game, comprehensively defeating Corio. This bodes very well for the future of the Surf Coast FC mens teams.

In the Sunday Division 1 competition the men had had a win to savor, outplaying a Rangers team bristling with veterans.

The weekend also saw some very strong performances from the boys teams. All teams were undefeated, with the under 14s boys metro winning a cliff-hanger 6/5 and Surf Coast FC’s newest recruit Ni Rea kicking an amazing 5 goals. The win was all the more notable, coming against the Green Gully juniors.
