MATCH REPORT VS SANDGATE 20 APR 2013
A perfect day greeted the players as we travelled to Sandgate for the first round of the year. The ground surface was not great and the wide expanses of the ground have caused the Pumas trouble for many years.
Reserves
The reserves started off slowly with Sandgate able to score the first three goals, leg speed was causing the Pumas some problems and we went in to the first break down by three goals. Stand out player for the first quarter was Charmo who knocked up getting the ball in defence. The second quarter started well, all players were starting to find their feet and with the assistance of a two goal breeze the Pumas were able to level the contest at half time. Charmo continued to play well, he was joined by Kassulke and Pezzelato with some fine individual efforts to get us back in the game.
The third quarter gave some breeze assistance to Sandgate, an outstanding quarter by Will Sutton working up and down the ground resulted in a real arm wrestle with a lot of players starting to cramp because of the pace of the game. Zac Minas was starting to find the ball and his defensive pressure in the forward line was great.
The final quarter started with us only a few points down, the breeze deserted us and was blowing across the ground. With only five minutes to go we were still a real chance but a couple of missed tackles gave a couple of soft goals to Sandgate and the win. The last quarter saw Wolbs stand up and almost get us over the line with his determination.
All in all a disappointing game and showed us that some positional changes may be needed to increase our leg speed on big ovals.
Final score: Sandgate 8 – 10 -58 Springwood 6 – 4 -40
Best Players: Chalmers, Kassulke, Pezzelato, Phillips, Minas, Sutton
Seniors
The seniors started off with a barn storming quarter of six goals to one. Proud and Thompson were leading the way with some great kicks in to the forward line where Bridge was on fire with three goals for the term.
The second term turned into an arm wrestle with both sides getting four goals and some of the pace came out of the game. There were some great goals where the ball moved up and down the ground with great precision and just shows what the Pumas are capable of in the future. Furfaro was starting to come into the game, his positioning behind the ball and strength in the contest were telling.
The third quarter showed the class of another of the new Pumas, Rhan Hooper kicking two vital goals which were full of class. The speed of the game was starting to show on both clubs with tiredness setting in and the heavy ground starting to take its toll. A number of dubious free kicks and 50 m penalties allowed Sandgate to close the gap with the Pumas only 17 points up at three quarter time.
The final quarter started with our key players again getting their hands on the ball. Hooper was again showing his class with some nice touches out of the centre and the back line holding up under a lot of pressure.
The final scores were Pumas 15 -10 – 100 to Sandgate 13 – 12 – 90
The final result was a great result for the club as Sandgate has always been tough to beat on their big ground. The Pumas are still working to understand all the new players at the club and it is clear to see there is a lot of improvement that is possible with the class of the players.
Next week we travel to Mayne where we were soundly beaten two weeks ago in a practice match. We need every supporter to come along and cheer for the Pumas.
