The Werribee Tigers were no match for western rivals Williamstown in today's
derby, suffering a massive 83-point defeat Burbank Oval.
The Seagulls set the early pace, kicking the opening seven goals while
holding the visitors goalless in a frenetic opening term.
Werribee struggled to get the ball beyond the centre circle as the home side
racked up 24 inside 50's to 5 before the first break.
Ben Jolley led the way with two goals inside the first 15 minutes for
Williamstown, as the Tigers static kicking out of the back 50 produced a
number of turnovers and saw the ball return time and time again.
Some forward pressure saw Kieran Harper collect a free kick to open the
second term, and he kicked truly from 45 metres out, dead in front.
Werribee dominated the play and peppered the goal face as chances went
begging - Addam Maric opting to dribble a kick from 20 metres out and
missing across the face, while Jarred Moore wasted a simple chance soon
after.
The second half of the quarter belonged to Williamstown, as they rebounded
from defence with ease, spread quickly and kicked truly - something Werribee
couldn't manage for the bulk of the afternoon.
Bulldogs-listed Pat Veszpremi was dominant for the Seagulls, while Mark
Austin shut Tigers forward Ben Warren out of the game completely.
The Tigers came out to fight after the major break - but a brace of goals
from Veszpremi and Roberts, followed by Jolley's third, extended the home
side's lead beyond 10 goals.
The dangerous forward pairing of Scott Clouston and Warren were made
ineffective for the first time this season - Williamstown filling the space
in front of them, and the Tigers midfield obliging by sending in high balls
that were easily dealt with.
Cameron Wood pushed forward for the Seagulls late in the term, and Werribee
had no match-up - Jake Wilson was again valiant down back, but couldn't
compete in the air with the big ruckman.
On a day where Werribee struggled to find many positives, big
ruckman/forward Ben Brown produced his best VFL performance to date, taking
10 grabs (four contested) and two goals, while Billy Iles was terrific late
in the game according to senior coach Scott West.
Moore and Ben Ross were amongst the leading possession gatherers - while
consolation goals for Brown, Maric and Clouston ensured the margin didn't
extend beyond 100.
Coach Scott West praised the work rate of his opponents and said the Tigers
were outplayed and outworked, with plenty of work to do at training this
week.
"They were just too good. They got their match up rights and outworked us.
When you go in seven goals down at quarter time you're always sort of up
against it."
"We've got to review this. get the players to review themselves and get some
feedback to them, and start again Monday night to prepare for Sandy".
