NEWTOWN & Chilwell unleashed three of its four newly recruited former AFL players in its 16-point loss to South Barwon.
Former North Melbourne midfielder Justin Perkins made a big impact early, taking a handful of marks and setting up teammates Jordan Crerar and Ryan Normington for the opening two goals.
Jai Sheahan handed his side a 13-point lead with a goal in the opening minute of the second quarter, but even the former Melbourne rookie would be shadowed in the forward line.
The second term belonged to former Geelong champion David Wojcinski, who weaved his way around the Swans' backpockets to set up two consecutive goals.
This was followed by a brave passage as fellow debutant Ryan Thomas spoiled South Barwon's key defender, enabling Wojcinski to kick a goal.
But Newtown & Chilwell coach Jacob Spolding believes there is more to come from the superstar.
"I thought 'Wojo' was really good for us, especially with his chasing and tackling," Spolding said.
"And I believe he'll only get better as he adjusts to how we play."
While the 203-game AFL star mustered scoring opportunities for teammates Sheahan, Normington and Aaron Baxter, it was the Swans who proved more accurate in the remaining half.
"When the scores are level at three-quarter time and you lose by 16 points, it's really disappointing," Spolding said.
"Obviously we had some good opportunities and played some good football but they're the best for a reason."
Among the positives was the Eagles' back six.
"Ash McCorkell's job down back was fantastic as was Nicholas's (Spolding) who played on another tall," the coach said.
"Ash hit the contest well on several occasions and Nicholas gave us some great run off half back as he does every week.
"Overall, the back six or seven off half-back worked very well."
Spolding also gave credit to the players who stood up to the roles left vacant by the recently departed Sandy Robinson and Jay Bett.
"Dave Symons worked tirelessly in the ruck for us, having only played a few seniors matches in the past.
"And Aaron Baxter's work rate up forward deserves credit, especially when he limited Matthew Scarlett's influence to a certain degree."
The Eagles play Colac at home on Saturday.
"We're both coming off a loss and we both want that first win on the board so it will be a good contest," Spolding said.
