Round 1 again Bloods' supporters and off it was to Werribee for the first road trip of the year. BOO (Brother of Oracle) and I packed supplies, e-tag and a cut lunch as we ventured down the Geelong Road. We arrived in time to see a most polished performance from the Magoos, who were giving the locals a nice old 'touch up'. Schoey, Ed, Scotty Ellis, Ferg and Newbs were running riot and it was fast, attractive football. BOO commented that he could ever remember the Magoos scoring 100 points in a Round 1 game. The Oracle just couldn't remember the Magoos scoring 100 points full stop! It was a terrific team performance when you consider we were several men down, with Timmy Hunter lasting 6.4 seconds before pulling a string. Coach Brocky joined in a vocal chorus of the 'Play Hard' as the boys celebrated a terrific win.
With the great photo miss of last week (Micky Meehan's blinder from 3 deep) behind him, the senior game saw the Oracle purchase 3 jelly pythons in advance as we were kicking with the wind and sugar may have been needed. But the first quarter wasn't great footy with nerves, turnovers, the wind and a fairly hard ground finding all the rust and cobwebs from both teams on full display. Weeksey didn't appear to be suffering any of the above symptoms and he, Nicco and Alfie repelled the many attacks Werribee launched throughout the quarter.
Up forward Poppa passed to Micky Meehan who then found the skipper Gledders in front. He then truly converted. Around the ball Lukey Pinot was getting has hands dirty and Stowie was upsetting the local with his fearless focus on getting the ball. Against the run of play Werribee caught us offside and goaled from close range. Joey was playing well in the ruck and Nashy was also prominent. Scores at quarter time saw us 1.7(including 2 posters) to the homeside 1.1.
The second quarter saw the wind shift to across the ground and it saw us hit the post 3 times! Early on Stowie got the ball to Poppa and he goaled. Seconds later Weeksey passed brilliantly to Micky who found Poppa, who converted well in blustery conditions. The home team showed some poor control and were penalised several times by the umps. Poppa goaled again, young Raff bobbed up with another. With Pinot, Stowie and Joey plying dominant roles the Bloods put on 7 goals to give us a half time score line of 8.7 to 2.4
The third quarter saw an arm wrestle with Werribee throwing all at the Bloods. Early on Weeksey found the roaming Meehan with a laces-out pass and he converted. Secc took a terrific grab at CHF and kicked another and in a courageous display, Alfie crunched a pack that left several home team lads seeking the interchange bench. We popped through 3 for the term and 10.11 to 3.6 was the score at the final break. It wasn't a great quarter of footy but plenty of run and passion was on display for the Throng to digest.
The last quarter saw Raff(which one?) have the ball on a string.New recruit, Collo was also hitting his straps and he found Poppa for his 5th and Micky and Trav followed shortly after. Newly promoted Spanos spun around around several opponents and kicked his first in the big league. Post match he was still smiling and the story will only get better with retelling! Collo finally got his first after a handful of posters. Gledders continued to show great leadership and when the bell rang signalling a 15.18 to 3.10 scoreline the skipper reflected that this was his first Round 1 win since joining the club.
The Oracle and BOO noted that this could be a terrific omen for the rounds to come. The song was difficult to coordinate as there were as many players in the debutant winners circle as there was in the outer ring. BOO and the Oracle grabbed a few transit beers, played real life 'Grand theft auto' with Brocky and Mal and found themselves at the NewBay for some medicinal frosties, completely free of peptides!
Everyone is to attend next week for our first ever home game lunch at Princes Park. No late notes will be accepted!
