Coburg suffered a disappointing loss to the highly fancied Williamstown Seagulls at Burbank Oval on Saturday. In what promised to be a close encounter after a very low scoring first term, the Seagulls ran away with it after half time and never looked back.
Coburg may have gone goal-less in the first quarter, but the game was being fought out in the middle with a lot of high pressure, tackling and hard ball being earnt by both sides. There was a reasonably strong wind blowing directly across the ground, doing neither side any favors. Williamstown managed to kick 2.6 to Coburg's 0.2 to go in to the first change 14 points up, but Coburg were certainly not out of it at this stage.
Half way through the second quarter Coburg found themselves at 0.6 before captain Nick Carnell broke the drought, kicking the Tigers first goal from a strong set shot. Following this the tight battle continued, with McBean looking strong once again and kicking the 2 remaining goals of the term, only to see Williamstown kick a late string of goals and go in to half time leading 6.6.42 to 3.7.25, by 17 points.
About 10 minutes in to the third term, Coburg got themselves within 1 goal of Williamstown, and it looked as if they had all the run, and were a chance to take this game away from the Seagulls. However Williamstown, and in particular Jake Stringer (4 goals in the quarter) put an end to that quickly. They kicked away very strongly and went in to the final break leading by 62 points after a 10 goal to 3 quarter.
Unfortunately for Coburg the fade out continued in the last quarter, with Williamstown kicking 8 goals to 2 to eventually come out on top by 100 points. It was a disappointing result for Coburg after looking strong early in the game, but they just seemed to run out of legs in the end, and the Williamstown home crowd pushed their team home with strong support throughout the second half.
Aaron Edwards had a very quiet game with just the 1 goal, and Robin Nahas faded away after looking very strong in the first half.
WILLIAMSTOWN 24.13.157
