SENIORS
We had our closest thing to a full team, only Grand Final players not playing were Simon Taylor, Dean Millhouse, Xavier Barry Murphy, Adrian Gelino and the still injured recruit Matt Davis. Due to play round 2. Back into the side from the previous practice game Ben Crowe, Robbie Ross, Ryan Mullett, Kris Bardon, Andrew Ellis and in second half Matt Greig.
We played some super footy against quite a large bodied and physical Old Carey coached by former Vermont Premiership player Steve Cochrane.
After a fairly equal first quarter, we pulled away in the second and third to be a convincing 62 points up at three quarter time. The Coach then decided to give Tommy Schneider and Ryan Mullett a rest as well as some of the forwards. Old Carey closed the gap a bit in the final term to see us victorious by 43 points.
More importantly was how we played and the fact that we had no injuries. It was pleasing to see our relentless aggression at the ball highlighted by some brutal tackling. Tom Schneider was outstanding at getting the ball from the stop plays and combined with Ryan Mullet’s speed and the power of Dan Mendes and Paul Chadwick it was impressive. Having the big Robbie Ross and Ben Crowe crashing the packs made things happen as well.
The difficult job this week will be picking the team with a genuine 28-30 blokes very much in the mix.
Final Score Vermont 19-9-123 dft Old Carey 12-8-80
Goals:- Van Unen 4, Dan Mendes 4, Ash Froud 2, Matt Greig 2, Tom Schneider 2, 1 each to Lachy Johns, Brad Jordan, Nathan Henley, Ben Crowe, Ryan Wilson.
RESERVES
Unfortunately Reserves were on another ground along way from the Seniors, so I didn’t anything of the second half. According to the Super Coach Jeff Rudd, the margin in our favour was more than 20 goals with Adrian Gelino, Michael Sonsie and Luke Strachan having a goal kicking picnic.
My highlight early in the Reserves game was a super mark by Scotty Cameron and a monstrous goal from Luke Strachan.
Again we had no injuries. All is good
UNDER 19’s
No one was keeping score, but Coaches thought final margin one way or the other was less than a goal. But considering almost all our boys were bottom gae it was a very good performance. There were about 5 boys playing up in the Reserves. So the signs for a successful Under 19 year were very good indeed.
With the Senior/Reserves list quite small compared with other years, under 19’s will regularly be required in the Reserves. There are quite a few boys, who are more than good enough anyway. The Senior Coach will be looking, as he did last year.
