U18s
Mayne vs Springwood 18's
Final score: d 3.4 (22) v 8.9 (57)
------- Game Summary ------
In the under 18's final Practice Match for the pre-season, we came up against a very keen and strong Mayne outfit. The first quarter was very even, with the boys not playing with the same endeavour and intensity that they had been throughout the previous two practice match's.
Credit goes to Mayne's pressure and enthusiasm. As the game progressed the boys started to get on top and gradually return to our required standard. Raaby was absolutely on fire again and continued his fantastic pre-season form, it is going to be near impossible to get him out of the midfield. Dan Willo showed great poise from the back line, his reading of the play, handball and overhead skills were a standout. Chez, Jared I, Cal, Wal and Rowie all forced themselves into the game and provided the spark and improvement needed. Under 16's; Jared Denny and Matty Leadbeater were absolutely fantastic in their first 18's game and did not miss a beat. Thanks guys and a big thank-you to Stephen Purdy's under 16's that have come up to help when needed during the pre-season; Dylan Keggen, Ryan Davies, Mat Leadbeater and Jared Denny.
Also a huge hanks to Rocket Menz who followed his good form from 18's up to help out the reserves, Nate Murcatt, Reece Adams and Matt Wallin all did not look out of place. Also congrats to Callum Eddy in a call up to the 1sts to help out.
With a few guys to return and only two weeks till the massive first round clash with Sandgate, it is now time to concentrate on being ready for what will be a enjoyable year.
Next Saturday the 13th, will be jumper presentations, it is very important that we are all there, and your parents and families in what will be a great night, to get the season underway.
Just a side note, we need to put aside some time at training this week to demonstrate the operation of a GPS unit for some of our players.
2013 Here we come!!!!....
Reserves
We travelled to the Mayne Football ground for the final practice match before we commence fixtures on the 20th of April.
The reserves started well against a Mayne side that were up for the contest. The first quarter saw the Pumas clearing the ball well from the centre. Chris Kassulke, Shaneo and Darcy were dominating the centre and the forwards led be Bear were converting their chances.
The second quarter became more of an arm wrestle with Mayne fighting their way back into the contest. The backline was under the pump with the taller Mayne players causing some problems. Lenny had to inject himself to balance the ledger, Robbie was playing his normal solid role at deep defence and turned back many attacks. The midfield players were helped by the inclusion of Jye into the guts, his effort and run was great.
The third quarter again was a struggle, the midfield started to get on top again and the forward line started to click with the big guys finding some space to move. Richard on the wing was giving us great drive and intensity. The Under 18 boys who backed up to give us some interchange players were injected into the game. Thanks go to Reece, Nathan, Ben and Matty for their help. The extra run and ability of these guys shows that the Pumas are going to be strong into the future because they did not look out of place. Greeny kicked an important goal to put us on top.
The fourth quarter started with Mayne having a real crack, again the defence group were under pressure. Mayne closed to striking distance until Barnesy won some ball out of the centre. Flynny started to find the ball and Wolbs steadied the ship with some great marks down forward.
The Pumas went onto win the game by 20 points
Best players in a very even display were. S. Murrihy R. Raudino A. Wallin A. Wolbers R. Jenkie
Seniors
The seniors although missing a few players put a very strong group on the paddock to take on Mayne. Mayne started very well with their speed and ability to run in waves causing the Pumas some problems, the backline was under extreme pressure. Hoppy, Matty and Troncy were all playing well to keep the damage to a minimum.
The second quarter started with the Pumas looking more settled and starting to control the pace of the game. The midfield started to click with Jacob Furfaro, Nashy and Mitch working hard to get us back in the game. Mayne were not going to let us back in the game easily and it became a real arm wrestle with both defensive lines on top. The quarter finished fairly even with both sides showing they are ready for the season.
Again the third quarter became an arm wrestle, The Eddy boys were both having strong games with Brayden good all day and Cal showing he has a big future. JR was our shining light down forward giving plenty of leads and hard at every contest.
The last quarter started with us still having a chance to get over Mayne. The quarter again went between the backlines with our forward line not quite clicking. After the first quarter the game was level for the remaining three quarters.
There is no question the Pumas can improve on this performance, it will be interesting to see the result of the next game against Mayne which is Round 2 for the year.
Best Players: JR, Mitch, Brayden Eddy, Hoppy and Cal Eddy
Mayne run out winners by 20 points.
