Footy's back, and there's a full season in front of us. A season of hope, a season of opportunity.
The season started at Mike Kenny Oval, all four of our teams away to Pennant Hills. The day dawned overcast, showers forecast, cool. Good footy weather.
Div 4 were up first, and were unable to score a goal in a scrappy first term. And although the deadlock was broken in the second term, and although the Bombers were competitive around the ground, some inaccurate finishing saw the Bombers four goals in arrears at half time.
The game looked to be slipping away during the third term, but suddenly the Bombers came to life and the goals started to flow as the margin fell to 25 points at the last change, and with two quick goals to start the last term it was back to 13 points.
But in a hard and physical game, the injuries began to pile up and the Bombers could get no closer. In the end, the Demons pulled away with some late goals to extend the losing margin to 42 poins; but in reality the flow of the game was much closer than that.
The Under 18s were up next. The first quarter never reached any great heights, one goal apiece with both sides squandering chances. The second term saw the ball travel from end to end with neither team scoring for the first 13 minutes. But the Bombers took the upper hand late in the quarter with three quick-fire goals to pull to a 13-point half time lead.
But the good work was undone in the third term, when the Bombers didn't play well and failed to score, while the Demons ran through four unanswered goals. The Bombers had surrendered the lead; and although they lifted and worked harder in the final quarter, the strain of playing catch-up footy proved all too hard and the Bombers fell seven points short.
The heavens opened as the Div 1 game got under way. And it was a slow
start by the Bombers, as the Demons had four goals on the board with the game just minutes old. But slowly but surely the Bombers worked their way back into the contest, kicking the next three goals to get to within a kick at quarter time and kicking the first goal of the second term to take the lead.
But the lead would be short-lived, as the Demons steadied with two late goals shortly before half time, to see the Bombers trail by 14 points at the long break. Two quick goals midway through the third term saw the deficit reduced to just one point, and even with the Demons scoring a late goal, the game was still up for grabs at the last change.
But the same familiar theme occurred as with the earlier games, although the Bombers continued to fight it out, they were unable to prevent the Demons from coming up with the answering goals; and the Demons would take the game by 20 points.
Premier Division started off an evenly contested and sometimes hard & physical contest. Evan Davis & Jared Shattock scored goals for the Bombers in the first term, with the Bombers trailing by four points at quarter time.
The second term was tight and tough, physical & sometimes spiteful. Goal for goal as fortunes fluctuated. Danny Roberts & Matt Varjavandi got themselves on the goal-kickers list; but the Bombers trailed by seven points at the long break.
The Bombers took the upper hand in the third quarter. Assisted by a double from debutant Sam Mason, with Lachy Hayres and Richie Lynch chipping in with goals; and with Ron Wason nailing a 50m penalty in the final seconds. And the Bombers started finding more run around the ground, kicking five goals to one to turn the deficit into a 21-point lead at the last change.
But the game wasn't over yet, and still more work to be done. Momentum had swung our way, and with the Fitzgerald brothers & Sam Caruthers running amok, the Bombers had four goals in seven minutes to get out to an unassailable lead. Even with the Demons getting a few junk time goals, it was a solid first-up win.
