Portland's two games against Koroit and Hamilton Kangaroos produced results that didn't make for good reading on the scoreboard. Fielding largely teams that were comprising Under 18.5 and reserve players from last year, hopefully the results will prove to be a poor guide to the coming season. It was an opportunity to give some of the younger players a taste of the quicker tempo of Hampden football. The Van Heugten brothers were noticeable for their consistent attack on the ball as was Josh Chapman. Scott Clark also showed some composure under pressure and indicated that the step up to major league football will be within his reach.
With this experience behind them, the focus now switches to the upcoming encounter against one of Portland's old rivals from previous years in Casterton. Saturday 23rd will see Portland travel to Island Park to take on the Cats in two( 2 ) matches. The Under 18.5's will open proceedings at approximately noon, followed by a Senior game. It will provide another chance for the selection panel to run the rule over the prospects of the young playing group as the season proper approaches.
