In the reserve grade game, a younger and fitter Pennant Hills team were in control for the whole day in the end winning by 13 goals. Although not reflected on the scoreboard, the Newcastle City side, made up of 1st and 2nd Division players melded well and showed great signs for the season ahead. Best players for Newcastle City included Tisdell, Baster, Haswell, Crace, Burke and Johnston.
In the Premier Division game, Newcastle City were able to keep in touch with the Sydney AFL premier division team throughout the game with the difference in all quarters only about 2-3 goals in favour of Pennant Hills with the final margin being 9 goals. Courtney Knight kicked 5 of the Newcastle City goals and was amongst City’s best also including Bailey, Avis, Lang and in his first game for the club after moving from Tasmania, Andrew Willmot.
It was a pleasure to have such strong competition from the Pennant Hills sides and thank them for making it a great day of football.
Newcastle City would like to thank the support and cooperation of the Nelson Bay club in assisting us to host these trial matches, and the contingent of umpires from the NCCUA for officiating on the day. We would also like to thank all the True Blue supports who came on Saturday.
