Premier League off to a flying start! MFC thrash Palm Beach...
A Murwillumbah football team has returned once, maybe twice, from Palm Beach with a victory in what feels like hundreds of attempts over our long history. Today MFC not only recorded a victory but thrashed this powerhouse of Gold Coast football by 5 goals to 1. Hat trick hero Troy Ruthven led the way with one of the most sublime goals Gold Coast football has seen. Seeing the Palm Beach GK off his line Ruthven tried the impossible! From the halfway line Ruthven cooly lifted the ball into the roof of the net. MFC had not been in the PL since 2007 and what a statement this was! This was soon followed by a 35 yard thunderbolt against the run of play by Palm Beach...and despite dominating possession MFC went into the sheds at 1-1.
The second half saw MFC raise their game to a different level. The defense continued to look strong and comfortable with wide players Shaun Core and Jaiden Walker shutting down PB at every turn and distributing with ease. The centre pairing of Peate and Saye dominated the PB front two and rarely looked troubled and were completely at ease on the ball.
MFC's midfield and attack came into their own in the second half and opened up the PB defense at will! Tannock, Lonie, Garside and Hurcombe all played their part as they constantly shut down and laid on a goal each for strikers Luke Morley and Alex Thelwall who both played a big part in sparking the second half goal rush.
Another big test awaits MFC as they take on title favourites Broadbeach at home next Saturday at 2pm and 4pm NSW. Do yourself a favour and come and see one of the best teams to play for Murwillumbah in a very, very long time.
