With all other NEAFL practice games cancelled on the weekend, John Blair took the chance to get some much needed game-time into his charges when offered the chance to go ahead with a game against the Suns, even though the conditions were far from ideal.
The upside was the guys had an opportunity to play on the main Oval at Metricon, even though it rained the entire game. The wet weather made it tough to get feel for where players are currently at, but it was a great opportunity for the team to work on their structures and to finally get their first game out of the way.
With the game shortened to 4 x 20 min quarters and the Hornets playing 30 players, it was difficult to get any continuity with so many rotations but all players will be better for the run. What was pleasing, was the young up and coming players such as James Ives, James Nelis and Matt Nickerson who all showed glimpses of things to come as did Daniel Brown whilst on loan to the Suns for the day.
Next week should see the return from injury of Jack Stanley, Josh Wagner, Reece Toye, Dave Kirwan, Mitch Pettit, Brendan Forbes, Frazer Eaton as well as Eddie Sansbury making his debut for his new club.
Next weeks scheduled games at Yeronga will be welcomed by all clubs as each team scrambles to get ready for round 1 on the 23rd March. The Hornets will be up against Morningside next weekend which promises to be a hard fought game as the Hornets new coach is up against his old club.
Game time next week is as follows;
Reserve Grade; 5.30pm
Seniors 7.30pm
