The Grand View Hotel Bayside Bombers have started the 2011 AFL Masters season off with a commanding win over the Springwood Pumas at Springwood on Sunday.
The Bombers never looked back from the first ten minutes as Russ Bagnall and Mike Tait controlled the centre clearances feeding Mark Hudgson (3 goals) plenty of leather. The Bombers were up by 14 points at quarter time but were not happy as inaccuracy in front of goals had cost them a greater margin, and with the breeze not favouring either end this lead didn't look as handsome as the Baysiders would have liked.
Onballers Steve Hazall and Ada Roberts started the second stanza well for the visitors collecting many a possession, across half back repelling Springwoods forward thrusts, new recruit Paul Sheehan and Russell Crowe were holding their own, The Bombers stretched their lead to 30 points at the long break with Craig Wieland and Carlo Achille keeping the scoreboard ticking over. The second quarter highlight came from Rocca who kicked a point from the goal square thinking he was in front of the goals when he was in front of the points.
With the game in a comfortable position, new Bayside assistant coach Doug Knight swung the changes throwing Darren Smith (2 goals) and Paul Magher into the forward structure and Bear Riley and Moose Nightingale into defence. This set the Bombers up for a solid last half where they outscored the Pumas in both quarters to set up a big 55 point victory. "You have to be happy with a round 1 victory like this” playing Coach Mike Tait said after the game, “ The new blokes also performed which is pleasing, it’s just great to be back on the paddock when you win like this”
