A recent school trip gave children in a Vietnam orphanage a taste of a sport they have never seen before, Australian Rules Football. The Children of Cho Lon orphanage were given a taste of AFL from the girls of Lowther Hall Anglican Grammar School with generous donations of footballs and pumps.
The girls took time from their annual "Our Place" Humanities Field Trip to teach the enthusiastic children some of the basics of AFL.
The children enjoyed learning from the girls and took quickly to the skills, showing their interest. Even though most of the Lowther girls have hardly played AFL, most girls were happy to try and assist the children as much as they could which provided a learning experience for both the girls and the children.
The boy I was partnered with took a particular liking to AFL, throwing himself all over the place to try and mark the ball and then even putting his own taste on the traditional handball and kick. He learnt the fundamental skills almost instantly despite not being able to understand a single word I said.
The girls left the AFL balls at the orphanage and we hope the children use them regularly for play time. We hope they benefited as much as we did when teaching them. We look forward to hearing the stories the girls of next year's trip bring back about whether the children still frequently use the AFL balls.
Special thanks again to Mr Len Villani, Melbourne's North/West Region Development Manager for donating the Auskick footballs and pumps.
