The long awaited creation of new social and administration facilities at North Port Oval is set to begin this month, with the City of Port Phillip awarding the construction tender at their last council meeting.
Port Melbourne Football Club president Peter Bromley welcomed the decision by Port Phillip City Council to award the tender to 2Construct.Pty.Ltd for construction of the new pavilion.
"It is now just over seven years, some times frustrating years, since the club and AFL Victoria first discussed a redevelopment with the City of Port Phillip” said Mr Bromley.
"I am very pleased that works will start in early October."
The pavilion, which was designed by South Melbourne based architects k20 Architecture, will include two meeting rooms, a multi purpose room, a commercial standard kitchen and a much needed administration area for the Port Melbourne Football Club. It will cost $2,445,741.
Mr Bromley said "The pavilion will enable the club to provide facilities that will improve our financial sustainability".
The Port Melbourne President also took the time to thank Sandridge ward councillor Janet Bolitho for all her support and assistance.
"We first started talking to Port Phillip just after Janet was elected and it has taken nearly two terms for the project to proceed".
"Without Janet's support I am not sure where we would be and I hope that in her retirement from council that she can spend more time following the Borough".
The club is now working to provide a gymnasium for use by it's players and the local community. The provision of a gym would increase participation of physical activity on the reserve and be a key connection point between the club and the growing Port Melbourne, South Melbourne and Docklands communities.
