Trent Cotchin has enhanced his ever-bulging trophy cabinet with another Jack Dyer medal. At just 22 years of age Cotchin has his 2nd Jack Dyer Medal after last years triumph. Last year he became the equal youngest winner, with Brett Deledio, to win the coveted award. Trent had a sensational season with the Richmond Football Club and the Jack Dyer Medal was not the only success on the horizon.
Adding to his Richmond Best & Fairest, Trent was named in the All-Australian side for the first time. After a very consistent season he was rewarded by the selectors starting on the wing in the 2012 team alongside the likes of Gary Ablett, Jobe Watson and Lance Franklin.
In what would prove to be a very successful week, Cotchin added the AFLCA Wingman Champion Player of the Year Award to his CV. Boasting past winners such as Gary Ablett, Dane Swan and Nathan Buckley once again this award is not to be undervalued. After each game the two coaches vote on a 5,4,3,2,1 basis and all votes are tallied throughout the season. Cotchin won by 8 votes from Dayne Beams and Gary Ablett.
In a final indication of what a brilliant season it was for Cotchin, the Tiger's dynamo finished 2nd in the Brownlow Medal. One of, if not the most coveted award for any player, the Brownlow medal is rich in history and prestige. It is a time-honoured award given to the Fairest and Best player of the season. Trent polled 26 votes and finished the season with 3 BOG and a second BOG in the final 4 games. He was unable to catch Jobe Watson, who had a blistering start to the season, but it certainly holds Cotchin in good stead for going one better in the coming years.
Cotchin, a former West Preston Junior champion, is widely touted as the next captain of the Richmond Football Club. Trent has had some major setbacks through injury since being drafted but now is up and about and making his name in the big league. Trent was nominated as the NAB Rising Star in Rd 12 2008.
Trent started playing at West Preston in the under 9s and quickly moved through the ranks. He won B&Fs at the club in 99, 01, 04 & 05, which included a premiership in his final year at the club. Trent took up a scholarship with PEGS and moved onto the Northern Knights before being picked up by the tigers.
Trent was a regular in representative football throughout his career and was regularly Captain or Vice Captain at this level. He represented Victoria several times and was named in the All Australian Under 17 team as Captain.
In Trent's last year at West he received the coveted Lew Hall Medal for outstanding Junior Development.
Trent finished of his career at the club with 94 games, he kicked 64 goals in his final year with a BOG performance in the Premiership amassing 32 kicks, 9 marks, 4 handballs and 3 goals in his Best On Ground performance. Trent went on to win the competition B&F with 28 votes from 13 games (8 BOGS & 2 2nd BOGS).
An outstanding effort and we wish him well and will watch him closely for the remainder of his long and prosperous career.
