Firstly the Bird congratulates the Sandgate football club who played strong hard finals football with a never say die attitude who ran out winners in both the under 18 and reserves. Both games where won in the last minutes of the game with Sandgate kicking goals to take back the lead to win the games. To the Western Magpies it was not the way things where suppose to go but you should hold your heads high on what both teams achieved this year.
The Under 18 div 1 cup preliminary final was played like you expect all preliminary finals to be played, with great intensity. The Western Magpies started well playing and matching the Sandgate team with the intensity and skills required to- be in front. The team battled hard and even though had the lead could not put the Sandgate team away.
The magpies held the lead at half time and expected the hawks to fight back strong in the second half. Which they did, setting up a barnstorming last quarter. Both teams gave their all and best and unfortunately for the Western Magpies, Sandgate ran out winners in the dying minutes by 1 straight kick. Congratulations Sandgate.
To the Western Magpies the bird has nothing but praise by the way you young men have represented yourselves and the club this year. It’s not the way you wanted to end but that’s football, it always needs to have two components wins and losses. We hope to see you all back at the club next year and the Bird looks forward to having an end of season burger with you and your parents in the very near future.
To Craig, Cubby and Robyn many thanks.
The reserves game saw Sandgate jump to an early lead catching the Magpies by surprise. It took to the end of the next quarter for the magpies to take the lead but with-out control of the game.
The Sandgate boys continued to raise the bar and the Magpies would respond but could not take total control. Again with the wind gaining some strength and the hawks running home with that advantage and the Magpies holding a slender lead the last quarter was definitely going to be a cracker.
The Bird again congratulates the hawks who ran out winners with the last goal of the day by 3 points.
It’s of little comfort but to the Western Magpies but it was a good season just not the great season you wanted to finish on. I am sure the youngsters from the team will learn from the experience and be at the club next year.
To Craig and BM good season and a thank you from the Bird and the supporters.
The Bird thanks both teams for a good season
