SANDGATE MASTERS V BRIBIE ISLAND Round 7 2012
Sandgate Masters took a bus trip last Saturday to play the debutante masters team from Bribie Island. With a packed esky beside us for the return trip, it was up to Andy to keep us off the drink and arrive sober and ready to play- yeah good luck!!
Having the round played on a Saturday afternoon resulted in several players being unable to make it due to work and other family sporting events- but we still arrived with several on the bench.
The first quarter saw goals to Middy and Butch and a great defensive pattern managed to keep Bribie scoreless. A few other behinds had Sandgate 19- Bribie 0, at the first break. The second quarter had Sandgate firmly grasping control of the game, and great service to our forwards from our midfield players resulted in goals to Steiny, Middy and Bails.
A slight scuffle arose when Carts smacked the smallest guy on the field after an altercation between him and another Sandgate mate. After the Bribie player shoved Dale our umpire on the way to the dressing room, Dale rightfully told him to have an early shower and not return.
This was the first game Sandgate had kept a team scoreless at half time and we went out for the 3rd quarter anticipating to keep their score low.
With the return of Timmsy from several weeks holidaying and also the returned presence of Steve Curran after his broken arm, our forward line produced one solitary goal from Middy for the term, but still kept control of the opposition.
The final quarter consisted of great footy from our backline with Willow, Luke, Carts and Mick consistently shutting down any forward movement from Bribie.
The final score- Sandgate 7-13-55 Bribie 1-1-7.
After a few drinks and snags from the hospitable Bribie team (great bunch of guys), we headed back on the bus with a few beers consumed on the way and plenty more back at the clubhouse. Last Master was kicked out at 11.30pm, when Willow was told never again to do the “Eagle Rock” half naked.
Winner of cup- Willow. Ribbon winner- Middy
Thanks to all the support staff who came up this weekend (Fev, Muddy, Cam, Rob, Fergy), Dawsey for strapping- much appreciated by all. Also, to all the families and friends who came to cheer us on- really appreciated. As always, thanks to Peter and coaching staff on the sideline- doing a great job making sure everyone gets a decent run on the field.
Next week is our anticipated bus trip to Hervey bay- could be our 4th consecutive win.
See you there.
