2012 FOXTEL CUP GRAND FINAL REPORT
There is no such thing as a happy grand final loser. You go into every game wanting to win, but a grand final has that extra special prize and from the opening bounce every supporter is thinking how great the outcome is going to be. Robbie Castello won the toss, that was a good start, but the next 15 minutes were a nightmare.
Claremont jumped us and were in complete control until 3 goals in three minutes from free kicks late in the quarter got the Tigers back in the game. We looked like it was past our bed time while Claremont was more intense and hungrier and deserved their 9 point quarter time lead.
Little changed in the second quarter, with Werribee failing to take the game by the scruff of the neck. At times it looked like Werribee was going to get it together, especially late in the quarter when Scott Sherlock goaled after some really quality play, but Claremont answered with a quick goal just before the siren, which really stung.
Rain fell during half time to make the conditions more difficult to handle, but after wasting a few early scoring opportunities Werribee coughed up a couple of goals and the writing was on the wall. Claremont was on top and a 4 goal to none third quarter sealed the Tigers fate.
Scott West called for a full on effort in the last quarter but the West Australian Tigers were up and about and eager to avenge losing last year’s Grand Final. Claremont came home with a convincing 44 point win to take the Foxtel Cup to Perth for the first time. Werribee can now get set for a very big game on the 11th of August against North Ballarat @ Avalon Airport Oval.
