There was a good following for the U/19s who took on top side St Kevins in Glen Iris. The boys were faced with a heavy 9 although conditions were fine with little breeze. Of course this game was bough to you by Giorgio’s which is just up the corner in Malvern.
It was a really even contest, although the lads had to contend with a tall side without the services of ruckman Sam Hall. Injuries to other players, including James Paul, didn’t help but the availability of Josh Alkemade (squad member of the VAFA U/19s) certainly boosted the defence. It was great to see the inclusion of various players from the school who seems to be enjoying their “holidays”.
Despite the heavy conditions, there were some fine skills on display with Andy Mathers, Luke Pinot, Matt Mitchell and Alex Spencer all showing the fineries of the game. Budgy was great in defence while Toy and Shilly were also good contributors. It was only seven points the difference at three quarter time but the home side were able to pull away, kicking a few goals in junk time. They appeared to score more easily than us, proving the old adage that they don’t get any shorter during the game.
