Gore Hill was bathed in sunshine as another big day of footy got under way on Saturday.
Div 4 were in action first, taking on Southern Power. The Bombers burst out of the blocks in the midfield, but could only manage behinds up forward, the first four scoring shots being minor scores. But eventually the kicking radar kicked into gear; and with the Bombers in control around the ground the lead got out to 17 points at quarter time. And although the game tightened up in the second quarter and scoring was harder to come by; the Bombers remained on top around the ground and held a 30-point lead at the long break.
The Bombers peppered the goals in the third term, and although their accuracy was out, with a score of 2.6 for the quarter, the defence was magnificent in holding the Power to one point for the quarter; and at the last change the Bombers were 47 points ahead. It was a pleasing performance by the Div 4 team, who are coming into some strong form. Going on with the job in the last quarter, they cruised to a 54-point win; back to back victories a good reward for effort.
Next in action was Div 1, also taking on Southern Power. The first quarter was a shootout, both sides deadly accurate. With 4.0 apiece for the quarter, scores were level at quarter time. But the floodgates opened in the second quarter, as Southern Power stepped up a gear. Seven unanswered goals to the Power in the second quarter saw the Bombers 46 points down at half time.
The Bombers kept working hard, but it was tough work against the second top team; and the Bombers found themselves outscored by three goals to one for the quarter and 63 points behind at three quarter time. And there was no respite in the final quarter, with the Bombers going down by 84 points.
The Under 18s were up next, taking on St George. After a last-minute scramble with several late team changes, it took some time for the Bombers to find their rhythm; with the Dragons scoring the only three goals of the first term and the Bombers 20 points in arrears at the first change. But the Bombers fought back in the second term, tackling hard, forcing turnovers and working their way back into the contest; levelling the scores shortly before the half time siren.
But it all came unstuck in the third quarter, as the Bombers had a shocker. Giving up seven unanswered goals for the quarter, the Bombers trailed by 45 points at three-quarter time. And although the Bombers lifted in the final quarter and won the quarter, the game finished with the Bombers going down by 38 points.
And finally it was time for the Premier Division clash with St George. A solid opening term saw the Bombers slowly but surely get on top, and with four goals to two for the quarter the Bombers led by 15 points at quarter time. The floodgates opened in the second term, with the Bombers slamming through seven goals to run out to a 46 point lead at the long break.
The Bombers had been well in control, but let their guard down in the third term. St George were desperate, and the Bombers let them back into the contest during the quarter. The Dragons kicked seven goals to three for the quarter, and by the last change the margin was back to 21 points. But St George's momentum slowed at the three-quarter time break; and the Bombers re-asserted themselves in the final quarter. The floodgates opened and the Bombers were in complete control with a seven goal quarter, making up all the ground they lost in the third quarter and blowing the final winning margin out to 57 points.
