A gloriousMelbournewinters day beckoned for the throng at McKinnon and it ended up being a good set of results. The seniors welcomed back some VFL players, while the Ressies were determined to improve on the previous week’s performance. The U/19s played host to bottom side Marcellin and wanted to ensure a positive result to maintain their place in the four.
We got off to a good start in the senior game and there was plenty of early intensity showing that the boys were likely to carry over their good form from theAJAXgame. Uni Blacks seemed to have one of their typical line ups with height in the right places and a busy on ball brigade. But they were to be no match for the brilliance of the Bloods. The first quarter highlights included Ridgy’s “steal”, when the Blacks defenders tried the Nankervis Brothers (Leylandbros) switch across the backline. Ridgy pounced to confirm we were in for a good day. Jackson Coleman took some great grabs, while Mike Meehan was finishing off well at full forward. Scrambled eggsJohnstonwas having a lovely time on his wing racking up the possessions.
While we missed some opportunities to go further ahead, the victory was probably set up in the second quarter. The defence led by the “mature beyond his years” Josh Alkemade and co skip Hammer held up very well against the threatening forwards of the top side. Ferg was also enjoying playing down back. Importantly the on ballers were getting plenty of the pill with Gledders, Sec and Pop leading the way. Silky Raff was also proving dangerous. The signs were good at half time.
In a way the third quarter put the icing on the cake as we extended our lead, scoring three goals to the visitors one. A 14 point half time lead was extended to 29 points. There was no questioning of players’ endeavour in what was a high standard game of football. Blacks mounted a couple of rallies but nearly everyone could sense an upset. Lill continued his fine ruck work, giving the ‘utilities’ first use of the ball while the Harrison brothers played with their customary smiley faces.
The last quarter started with the sun setting fast (actually at the same speed as normal but it sounds better) proving why the Buxton scoreboard side proves more popular amongst the spectators. Blacks got the first goal early in the quarter and the prospect of a comeback presented itself. But there was to be no Johnny Farnhams here. The game tensed up but a reply from Pop relieved the pressure. Lachie Nash took a terrific mark running with the flight, while a strong Seccull tackle resulted in a goal and nearly a “double header” as the Blacks player didn’t seem to like being tackled when taken on. The result then became a formality with a 23 point victory being just reward for effort.
This was a fantastic team performance with everyone contributing and playing their part. It was great to see Alex Roberts, a Year 11 student playing in the magenta and black with enormous passion. The song was sung with gusto but surprisingly without the cordial spray. A big game next week when we take on OMs in another eight pointer.

The Ressies took it right up to the second placed Blacks side and indeed had some chances to clinch victory. The visitors had slipped out to a 27 point lead at half time but the boys were not to be overrun with a stirring third quarter setting up the last quarter. The days of capitulation are over and the last quarter was torrid but we were unable to get that extra goal to get us that little bit closer. Will McTaggart was amongst the goals again while Jazz McLauchlan was at his imposing best. Richard Mathers probably had his best game for the year.

The U/19s put in a very accomplished effort to get the points against bottom side Marcellin. It can often be a danger game when taking on a lowly side, especially in such an even season, but the lads went about there business well. The on-ball trio of Hall, Pinot and Paul (sounds like a good name for a band) were at their efficient best and Matt Mitchell feasted on the servings. He finished with eight which gives him a handy lead in the competition’s sharpshooter stakes.
The boys now take on second placed St Kevins and can go close given their recent run of good form. Again it is great to see some school boys playing as they get a taste of club life.
