A soggy afternoon at Keysborough greeted the throng and the U/19s were the only side to take the chocolates. While we didn’t get the onfield success, it was a great way of promoting Haileybury football. There was a lot of leather being kicked between the two clubs and school and it was great to get a chance to see the school side in action. They were in the hunt for a long way but Brighton Grammar got the better of them in the last quarter.
The seniors got off to a great start kicking the first two goals of the game, when running into a slight breeze. Indeed the school or northern end was going to be the hardest end to score all day. But then Old Brighton gradually got on top, generally being first to the ball and being a bit more constructive when in possession. Conditions were definitely a heavy 9 and were only getting worse. There isn’t a lot to describe in a game which had few individual highlights. Lill continued his fine form for the year while Hammer and Gledders led from the front. The forwards were starved of opportunities as the game was largely played between the two half back flanks.
The Ressies got off to a poor start and we up against it from thereon. The scoreboard shows that the two sides were generally equal after quarter time, making the boys think what may have been. Luke Pitcher was great all day, while Colesy, Sec and the Mathers brothers all relished the conditions.
The winners on the day were the U/19s who beat the previously undefeated Old Brighton. The boys got off to a strong start and were able to hold off the opposition for three quarters. It was real gutsy stuff. The visitors kept coming and in some periods, looked like they may steal the game. It was an excellent game, played hard but in the right spirit.
Luke Pinot again led from the front while Sam Hall and Secca also made really solid contributions. But it is fair to say that it was a real team effort. Well done guys.
So at the half way mark of the year all the senior teams are four from nine while the school First XVIII have one three games. Perhaps remarkably the seniors are only a game and a bit of percentage out of the four which is the same for the U/19s. The Ressies are two games off the pace, but not completely out of the running.
It has been a real mixed bag so far. For the “ones” there have been some good wins over AJAX and Beauy, but some poor games against Werribee and OMs. For some reason we have had numerous hand injuries this year, on top of other longer term injuries. This has meant for some tough decisions at the selection table. So we haven't had the consistency which reflects the fact we are a young squad. A number of players are getting better with the experience. With a more "settled" draw in the second half we can expect improvement.
The Ressies have played in excess of 52 players so far this year, which may be some sort of record. This reflects better depth at the club - one of our key targets.
