Saturday dawned bright and sunny, a welcome contrast to the last few weeks. And it was an early start at Picken Oval for the Under 18s, taking on Wests.
The Magpies got an early goal, but then the Bombers hit their straps with six unanswered goals. Setting up a lead in the opening term, the Bombers were never in trouble. Extending their lead in every quarter, it was another solid display by the Bombers, as they strengthened their grasp on a top five position with a comfortable 63-point win.
It was a solid but unspectacular first half in the Div 1 game against Wests; but the Bombers had the answers when it mattered to bring up a 27-point half time lead. It was a similar trend in the second half; as the game became physical and hard at times, but the Bombers were way too good for anything the Magpies could throw at them and went on to win by 62 points.
Meanwhile Div 4 were in action at Bensons Lane; and although it was a brave fight by the Bomber thirds, they went down by 23 points to NorWest.
Picken Oval historically hasn't been a happy hunting ground for North Shore, but it didn't take long for it to be clear that the Bombers were too good for Wests in Premier Division. Racing out of the blocks, the Bombers had five goals on the board within the first 15 minutes, and a total of eight for the quarter. A highlight of the quarter was a "speckie" by Pat Brackin, flying high over an opponent to pull down a spectacular mark and goal. With eight goals to one in the first quarter, the Bombers led by 43 points at quarter time; and even though their kicking radar wasn't always in perfect working order in the second term, the margin was out to 62 points at half time.
The second half was a procession. From the masterly midfield, gathering the ball at will and pumping it forward with ruthless efficiency; to the miserly defence who refused to concede a score, rendering the Magpie forwards ineffective; to the creative and attacking forward line - it was hard to find a Bomber who didn't lower his colours on the day. A sensational team performance resulted in a comprehensive 136 point win, another chapter in what has been a great season to date.
