The Auskickers had a bye this week, which left it up to the Under 9's to carry the Eagles banner up to the Southern Highlands. They were hosted by the Hawks at their home of Loseby Park, which has the notable attribute of being distinctly downward-sloping to one side. It was predictably cold as is usual in the Highlands in winter, with a strong and steady wind blowing first down the field then veering to across, then back down again. One other factor made for an unusual game - the cones laid out for the U9 playing field were arranged to make the field wider than it was long, creating deep wings on both sides but quite short distances between the goals.
The Eagles started strong and led throughout the first quarter, with Carson Holloway kicking two quick goals through the "uphill" posts. But from the second quarter onward, the Hawks responded using both the wind and the curious deep pockets to excellent advantage. The Hawks ended up kicking the remainder of the goals for the match, with the Eagles contributing a few behinds.
But the Eagles did not collapse and played some excellent football throughout the wild, windy game. Kurt Dawes put in more than a few excellent tackles, and Connor McManus put in several great leads and got a few fantastic marks as a result. Eagles' best for the day ended up being Carson, Kurt and Connor, but the whole team put in an excellent effort in what was certainly the best-played game from the Eagles to date. Well done guys!
