Match Report - By Nick Ciantar
Werribee played Sandringham at Avalon Airport Oval on Sunday, in what was expected to be a great game. It turned out to be all about Werribee, with a comprehensive 79 point victory. Werribee won 20.16:136 to Sandringham's 8.9:57.
In wet and gloomy conditions Sandringham started off well, kicking the first goal of the game through Jamie Cripps. The first quarter went goal for goal, with Nathan Ablett’s return to the VFL including a goal for the Tigers. At the end of the first quarter, the Zebras led by 5 points, in what looked like an exciting game of footy.
At the start of the second quarter, the rain began to pour and the Tigers started to take control. Werribee kicked the first two goals, before great team play by the Zebras to kick their first and only goal of the quarter. Werribee kicked six goals and started to get on top of the contest. The game was played in their half. Leigh Harding and William Martiniello controlled the Tigers back line and the Tigers went into the main break with a handy 26 point margin.
The third quarter started the same for the Tigers. They kicked the first two goals, to extend the margin to 40 points. Majak Daw was winning the hit outs and also played in defence. The Zebras went nearly 30 minutes without kicking a goal. The Tigers were dominating the midfield clearances and pumping it into their 50. Going into the last break, the Tigers had a 25 point lead and a close finish seemed possible.
However, Werribee stamped their authority on the contest in the last quarter. They kicked 8 goals to Sandringham’s 1 behind and collected much more of the ball. Ben Warren kicked 4 goals for the Tigers and Ben Speight kicked 3. The Tigers spread the goal kicking load, finishing with 10 different goal kickers. Will Sierakowski was one of the best on the ground, kicking 2 goals and finished with 27 disposals. He was used in a variety of positions and his decision making was influential. Ben Ross had 26 disposals and kicked 2 goals.
For Sandringham; Beau Dowler played strong down back, Farren Ray had 25 touches and provided quick movements and Myke Cook had another solid game in the midfield, finishing with 20 touches and 2 goals. The Zebras couldn't find an avenue to goal in the last and will be looking at a much better performance next week.
Werribee play Bendigo at Windy Hill next Saturday, whilst Sandringham meets the Casey Scorpions at Trevor Barker Beach Oval, the televised game on the ABC on Saturday.
