SENIORS
A great day for football, with the past players and life members part of the big crowd ready for a huge match. However, the injury curse continued for The Hills with Joffa Byron and Dave Varano both pulling out prior to the game and more Reserves filling in. A dominant Mernda then proceeded to demolish the Hills at Cracknell Reserve kicking 24 goals to 8 and now sitting on top of the ladder. The Redbacks through the middle did their job including Simon Gunn in his 50th game, Simon Amore and Ben Strongman, whilst Dean Haydock and Rob Guest battled hard down back. But at the end of the day there were not enough forwards to kick goals and the back line gave their opponents far too many opportunities which were pounced on by the Demons. A regrouping and refocus at Watsonia is needed next week to steady the ship.
RESERVES
Injuries and illness took its toll once again on the playing group. This meant that the Redbacks reserves side was taking on the undefeated Mernda undermanned and underdone. This problem brought about a challenge, but the 20 players who took the field were prepared to band together and fight the good fight which they never gave up on and they should be congratulated for that as it would have been very easy to drop their heads before the game even started. The scoreboard in the end didn't look great but it didn't indicate the amount of endeavour and passion that all the 20 players gave which was encouraging. Better players were Andrew Boyle, David Walton, Jimmy Anderson, Brett Aldred and Andrew Schadendorff.
