We are now moving into the second half of the football season and have seen some great footy so far. As we are sure you are aware, there has consistently been three or four games that have not been covered with field umpires. As a club, we expect to have umpires appointed to our games, but in some cases this is simply not happening due to injuries, illness and school commitments which are the most common excuses why an umpire cannot do a match.
We are excited to continue to build the umpiring numbers and we need your assistance in doing this. What we, as a Club, need is more umpire numbers and the more umpires we have, the more competition there is for spots, which in turn equals better umpiring. As such, we write to encourage you to consider taking up umpiring, even if its just to come to training for a few weeks to see what it is like. We guarantee you that most of those players will quickly be umpiring in the morning and playing in the afternoon each week. The real recruitment of umpires is done through clubs & we need players to come down and start blowing the whistle.
Last week, the Knights took the lead & launched a new Northern Umpire Academy. We had 15 umpires attend, both new and experienced, who were keen to get to training and learn something new. This was a great start, but we really are striving for 30+ umpires attending each week as this is the number of positions available each week in the north/east region of the league.
We also have our main training ground in Moorleigh Reserve which operates on Wednesday and Thursday evenings. Pre-season, we saw at least 100 umpires turning up each week but this has slowly tapered off for reasons unknown. We encourage those who have umpires in their ranks to get down to training regularly. Just like footy training, umpire training is important in the development of young umpires.
In summary, we need YOUR HELP. Despite being half way through the season, it is evident we still need new umpires.
