We at Campbelltown AFC are very proud of and pleased that Ben Wharton, our Vice Captain, has been selected in the NSW/ACT Rams squad for the NAB national Under 18s Championships.
Ben was the only player from the Macarthur area to be selected in the team.
Giants Academy manager Lachlan Buszard said "He was thrilled with the result, which showed the Giants Academy and NSW/ACT AFL talent pathway programs were strengthening the development of players in the GWS zones. Our club Campbelltown is an important link".
It is the highest you can play at the Under 18 level and it's a credit to the players selected for the hard work they have put in," he said.
It's a good opportunity for them now to go and play on the national stage and play against the best young players in Australia and see where they are at and whether they are good enough to play AFL level.
Ben said, "I'm really excited about my selection at this level of AFL. It's the highest Representative level you can play when your only 17 years of age. When you combine this with the training at GWS Giants and at Campbelltown, I am now experiencing playing at the highest level that I can and I feel privileged to be included at such a high level of competition with such a fantastic group of people. I also acknowledge my Coach (Craig McGough), mentors and team mates from Campbelltown whom I'm proud to represent at the highest level. Together with my family, Campbelltown AFL Club and Camden Junior AFL Club have been the driving force behind my development and I thank all those people in the Macarthur Region that have supported me, which include my junior career coaches Craig & Stuart Beveridge.
The ACT/NSW Rams' first game is against Victoria Country on June 2.
