MATCH REPORT SUNDAY 20TH MAY
MAZENOD PANTHERS BLUE 7.11.53 defeated COBURG 1 3.5.21
After a narrow loss of 2 points by the undefeated Ringwood, Coburg ran onto Central Reserve like a team full of steam and confidence to take on the mighty Panthers. Without a couple of our ball winners Chris Vergos (overseas) and Josh Wallace(injured) super coach Regan had to remodel a winning combination we had over the last two games. John Soles was on fire right from the first bounce and kicked the first of his 3 goals for the quarter, Peter Zapantis was rucking well and again, Simon Pollock was showing just how his natural ability has returned after a couple of years below his best form. The pocket rocket Sammy Samason was still making those second and third efforts at every contest that has become part of his natural game. We went into the second quarter 3goals 3 with Coburg failing to penetrate our very strong backline and did not score.
Coburg never gave in at any stage against a very strong Panthers outfit, using new found teamwork right across the ground the ball found it’s way into the hands of Aaron Yaksender that kicked a beautiful 50 metre goal from centre half forward, Aaron has given Rod Pettit, and the rest of our ball magnets a great target in front of goal. Shaun Dux was kicking beautifully to position and set up several attacks for our forwards. Aaron Yaksender kicked is second goal and the ever reliable Mark Vanderven joined the party and slotted another one, at half time we were 34points in front and feeling confident.
Justin Dovaston as always was magnificent down back, and had great support from Jake Phillips sweeping across half back, and helping out with some heavy ruck work when needed. The pace of the game was taking its toll on our run with players, and Coburg were showing signs of a revival.
More than making up for the loss of Chris Vergos, Daniel Hassan and Jason Gannon were playing a rugged crash through defense and repelled several Coburg efforts on their forward line.
At the start of the final quarter several players thought that we had done enough to win, and that was the signal for Coburg to take control of the last quarter and kick 3 goals 3 to Panthers 1 goal 1 behind.
A great result for Panthers Blue as we are now undefeated heading toward our clash with Ringwood next week.

Great day for the focus to be on our foundation player, George Youssef playing his 100th game for the Mazenod Panthers, when George started eight years ago he played his debut game at age39, he had not previously played football in a team situation, and had limited skills and coordination, he can now handball as well as any of his team mates, and his kicking is great, particularly in front of goal, George showcased his progress with the Panthers this week at full forward against Coburg with Panther fans following George from one end to the other encouraging him to kick a goal on his big day. George is a credit to his family, and a great ambassador for FIDA footy. All players and supporters are very proud to call “Georgie” their team mate. George’s achievement would not have happened without the dedication and support from his Mum . Thank you Eugenie.
A great asset and club person at the Panthers, Karen Morrison again had the apron on, and produced another masterpiece football cake for George and his teammates to enjoy after the game.”Thanks Kaz” you are a legend.
After George lead the team onto the ground running through his 100th game banner, coach Matt Johnson had his hands full on the boundary line trying to reconcile players on the ground with names on the whiteboard, as all players were anxious to help Georgie celebrate his big milestone.
Panthers Black have found new enthusiasm with a very settled team with several players only required to play one game this year instead of having to make up numbers in Panthers Blue.
Chris Johnson and Damien Cousins have found new skills and along with John Hamilton, Vickram Jholl and Anthony DiStasio are leading the team by example. Daniel Oakley is settling into the Panthers game plan, and on several occasions brushed aside opposition ran through the middle and thumped the ball forward to our smaller forwards Matt Anderson and Nick DiStasio.
David Gorin was again good in the ruck, while Daniel Palmer was showing his natural ability to get the ball at either end of the ground.
Panthers Black pressured Coburg all day and in a remarkable effort kept them scoreless the whole game.
Welcome back Marcel Vermulst for his first game of the season opening the Panthers score with a very nice goal in the first quarter, quickly followed by John Hamilton and James Hosken,that left Coburg wondering how to stop the mighty Panthers.
Rising star, our youngest Jack Morrison was playing his best game for the Panthers, with his new found height and strength was doing a great job all over the ground.
Roger Winter was on his own and controlling the outer wing without an opponent, while Nick Crilly was using his lightning speed to dominate the other side of the ground.
Neil McKinnon made a late start to the game, and immediately made an impact when he ran on the ground at centre half back and dominated that position..Very unselfish play by one of our most popular players Andrew Conner when he tried everything possible to pass the ball to George Youssef for him to kick a goal on his 100th game.

SPOTLIGHT ON ALF DUIJKERS
Alf has been a volunteer with the Mazenod Panthers from our first training night in 2005, he has been our trainer for both teams, attended over 200 games of footy, transport driver for many players in the early days, willing to help out in any capacity around the club, Alf has no family playing footy but has been dedicated to our program and our players for the past eight years. Alf is a quiet achiever not liking the spotlight but a tremendous quality person that all Panthers players and supporters would like to thank for being part of our club. If you see Alf around the club, give him a pat on the back and say “Thanks Alf”’

APPROACHING MILESTONE GAMES
50 games for Roger Winter next week against Ringwood
John Hamilton will play his 50th game at home on 1st July against Ferntree Gully..

To Chris Vergos, He has gone overseas to USA and Canada and will be unavailable for our next two games, we all wish him a great holiday and a speedy return to the Panthers. We will really miss his attack on the ball across the backline.
TRIVIA
Playing the same number of seasons of FIDA football to reach 100 games is equivalent to at least 180 games of normal club footy. Well done to all our 50 and 100 game players.
EXTRACT FROM MATCH REPORT JULY 2007
Blast from the past of just what these two great Mazenod Panthers team leaders have been through to reach 100 games.
More importantly two of the Panthers finest went down fighting, and finished the day at the hospital.
Simon Pollock took a very hard tackle early in the game, and as a result has a suspected torn kidney and will spend until next Tuesday in the Moorabbin Hospital under observation. In the other incident happened late in the last quarter when Justin Dovaston was sent into the centre to assist our on-ballers, in true Dovo courage he threw himself at the ball, only to cop a wayward kick to his cheekbone from an opposition player just as the siren sounded to end the game. Justin went to the Alfred Hospital to have 4 internal and 5 external stitches to his cheekbone. Our thoughts and best wishes are with these players and their families, and we wish them a really speedy recovery and back to their smiling best.
