Vermont 15-11-101 defeated Croydon 10-10-70

Coach’s Comment: We are taking baby steps but things are starting to roll. The coach also paid a massive tribute to Aaron Nummy.
Summary: In damp conditions Vermont got off to a good start kicking the first 2 goals and had most of the play. In general field play we controlled the game and there was some good passages of play which at times was let down by poor disposal. When we made mistakes Croydon were unable to take full advantage of this. Our backline was playing well and was very solid. Towards the end of the quarter Croydon worked into the game kicking the last 3 goals to hold a 3 point lead at the first break.
The 2nd quarter was a very tight and scrappy with both sides trying to open up the play without much success. Most goals for both sides were created by mistakes from each side. We still had control of the ruck and the midfield and we always look threating when moving the ball into our forward line. The most pleasing thing was our forwards were very working very hard to keep the ball in our area with pressure and strong tackling but we were still unable to put it on the scoreboard.
The 3rd quarter saw Vermont dominating the quarter kicking the first 5 goals to lead by a game high 39 points. Once again our tackling and our disposal into the forward line had more purpose and Croydon were unable to cope with the pressure we were applying. Our teamwork and intensity to work for each other started to materialise and we were treated to some good play. At the last break we held a very comfortable 34 point lead.
Unfortunately the 4th quarter turned into a dour struggle as the sting had gone out of the game. Croydon were still pressing forward but our backline who played well all day were up to the task repelling most attacks and also set up some good plays as well. At the end Vermont ran out comfortable 31 point winners.
Whilst the game never reached any great heights as a spectacle there was some positive signs that we as a team started to work and support each other. Some of our new players who have joined the club enjoyed their best games for the year and the young boys that were promoted from the Reserves also have made a contribution. Well done to Croydon who played well and fought the game right out.

Coach’s Comment: Structurally we were very good but we need to keep the momentum going against better sides with Knox and Blackburn in the next fortnight. Our run overlap was very good. In a poignant moment he quoted from the Eagletonians bible verse 4 “No one ever walked to the top of the mountain”.
Summary: The Reserves juggernaut just keeps rolling on this time with an emulsification of a undermanned Croydon to the tune of 140 points. In all fairness if it had not been for our inaccuracy in the 2nd half it could have been a lot more. Once again the boys did all the things that were asked of them but at times were a little indirect and probably overused the ball in their efforts to bring each other into the play. With so many clear winners on each line we were always able to control who and where the ball was being delivered too. At the end of the day it’s the 4 points that matter and we now sit 5-0 with a comfortable percentage awaiting a good test in Blackburn next round.
