Coaches Corner with Scott West
Scott West has had an interesting start to his time as senior coach of the Werribee Football Club. The playing list had a turnover of 25 players, new assistant coaches and support staff, which meant he had to hit the ground running. Media Manager Kevin Hillier caught up with him to see how he has settled in at Avalon Airport Oval as we head into Round 9 against the Northern Blues.
KH:How do you think the team is going?
SW: I think the team is progressing well. Every game we play I think we have been playing better as a team, I believe we have a lot of talent in our group and the challenge was and will be to make sure we are playing as a good team.
KH: Williamstown was the game that got away. What did you learn from that?
SW: There’s no doubt the Williamstown game was the one that got away, but sometimes going through those experiences you come out the other side a better team. We, as a group, now understand that you just can’t afford to take your foot off the pedal for even a minute in this game.
KH: How have you found the transition from AFL to VFL?
SW: The transition has been interesting. It’s such a different environment, having come from coaching full time footballers, where you have all day - most days - to teach, to a job where time is like gold. It means we have to plan really well and make sure that we are prioritising what we do with the players to get the best out of them.
KH: You have played a number of Werribee listed first gamers. The depth looks good?
SW: I think we have really good depth this year, not only have we been able to play 7 first gamers we have a lot of players in the development league team that are in great form and are knocking on the door very loudly for senior selection.
KH: What has been your biggest challenge so far?
SW: I think the biggest challenge so far has been really managing the playing group. We have been really fortunate that both we and the Kangaroos have had full lists to choose from, which has put a real premium on spots in the senior and development teams.
